Upcoming food and drink happenings, including the CheeseFest + Ferment festival in Rymill Park, Lucky Dumpling Market on the Riverbank, National Wine Centre’s Champagne Fest, the Vegan Festival and a yum cha street party – all on this weekend.

CheeseFest+Ferment – October 27-28

CheeseFest is back this year and has been teamed up with Ferment the Festival for a two-day celebration in Rymill Park of all things fermented. As well as wine, beer and gin cheese pairings, there will be a range of other tastings, ferment masterclasses, food stalls, bars and cooking demonstrations by chefs including MasterChef Australia judge Matt Preston (hosting a mac ‘n’ cheese masterclass), Karena Armstrong from Salopian Inn (hosting a pork buns masterclass) and Sharon Flynn from The Fermentary (leading two fermentation workshops). The Ultimate Laphroaig Tasting – October 25

“Whisky ambassador” Dan Woolley from The Exchange will be joining the crew at Hains & Co in Gilbert Place for this event, where guests will get to taste some “extremely rare” Laphroaig whiskies (see the line-up here).  Tickets are $150, including a takeaway bottle of Laphroaig Select, and the tasting will run from 6.30pm until 8pm.

Lucky Dumpling Market – October 25 – November 11

The Lucky Dumpling Market will return to the Riverbank precinct (on the Convention Centre lawns) for this year’s OzAsia Festival, with a range of Asian cuisines including Vietnamese, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese and Indian. Among the stalls returning to the market will be The Filipino Project, Sookii La La and Teppanyaki Noodles, while newcomers include Humpty Dumplings and Astonish Patisserie. Drink options will include a sake bar and bubble tea from Bubble Bus. The market will be open from 4.30pm-late Monday to Friday, and from midday until late on Saturday and Sunday.

Langhorne Creek on Leigh Street – October 26

Winemakers from Langhorne Creek will descend on Leigh Street from 4.30pm-8pm for this pop-up event, with more than 100 wines available to purchase by the glass or bottle. Wineries represented will include Bleasdale, Lake Breeze, Bremerton, Temple Bruer, Karrawatta, Angas Plains, Vineyard Road and Rusticana. Entry is $5 including souvenir glass (note: this is not a tasting event, so wine is available only to purchase).

National Wine Centre’s Champagne Fest – October 28

More than 25 wineries will take part in the National Wine Centre’s third annual Champagne Fest, which will include masterclasses and a menu featuring freshly shucked oysters, paella and antipasto platters. Wine co-ordinator James Boden says this year’s offering has been extended to include wines from Italy, Spain, the UK and the US, alongside French champagne houses and South Australian wineries.  DJ Driller Jet Armstrong will entertain festival-goers throughout the day, which runs from 11am until 6pm. General admission tickets are $25 per person if purchased in advance or $30 per person at the door (masterclass tickets an additional $40).

Vegan Festival Adelaide – October 27-28

Taking place in Victoria Square, this year’s Vegan Fest will feature dozens of stalls, including by food producers such as Gut Feeling Fermentation, Bob Bowl Catering Co, RAW Earth Dessert, Staazi & Co, Forage Supply Co, Milkless, Four Seeds and Cakeboy Donuts. There will also be talks, workshops, cooking demos, dancing and kids’ activities. See the full program here.

Yum Cha Street Party – October 28

Gouger Street traders are hosting a Yum Cha Street Party from midday until 3pm, with three individual menus curated for the event by the Ding Hao, Star House and Kingdom Yum Cha restaurants. Tickets, $100pp, can be booked in advance, and guests will be seated at three long rows of tables. The street party, taking place on Gouger Street near Victoria Square, will also include live music and chefs’ talks about the customs surrounding yum cha.

World Tea Gathering – November 2-9

A week of pop-up events and performances celebrating the art of tea will be taking place during this thirst-quenching OzAsia Festival event. It’s being hosted by the Art Gallery of South Australia and will include “impromptu tea experiences” throughout the gallery and at other venues such as the Botanic Gardens, Festival Centre and State Library, plus performances with World Tea Gathering co-founder Adam Wojciński and performance artist Yumi Umiumare, and a Tea Symposium on November 3. Adelaide Wine Markets launch party – November 3

This pop-up wine market will launch its new monthly event at the Market Shed on Holland with a party on Saturday, November 3, featuring food vendors, a bar and live music from 5pm-10pm. There will be wine tastings from producers including Karrawarra, Forage Supply Co, Hey Diddle and Chateau Yaldara. Tickets are $20 including take-home wine glass.

Double Shot Coffee Fiesta – November 4

Cafes, roasters, suppliers and baristas will converge on the Soldiers’ Memorial Garden in Unley for the annual Double Shot Coffee Fiesta, featuring tastings, workshops, food stalls, live music and family-friendly activities. The theme of this year’s event is “coffee with a conscience”, and roasters represented will include Dawn Patrol Coffee, Patio Coffee and Soho coffee. The fiesta runs from 10am until 4pm, with more information available on the official Facebook page.

Yangarra Spring Picnic – November 4

Yangarra Estate Vineyard at Kangarilla will host its annual spring picnic on the winery lawns in November, with guests able to taste its new-release spring wines by the glass and bottle. There will be acoustic tunes, lawn games and “family-friendly fun”, and you can either BYO picnic or pre-order a Yangarra cheese hamper. The picnic begins at 11am and entry is $15.

Hellbound Wine at Pink Moon Saloon – November 4

Pink Moon Saloon has teamed up with Hellbound Wine Bar for this collaborative dinner at Hellbound in Rundle Street. Tickets are $75 for a six-course menu plus arrival cocktail, and Hellbound Sommeliers’ Collective wine matches will be available by request on the day for an extra $55. Details here.

Melbourne Cup – November 6

The annual race to organise your Melbourne Cup function is underway, with places already booking up quickly. Here are a few of our picks in venues large and small:

Hennessy Rooftop Bar: The Mayfair Hotel’s Cup Day high tea in the Mayflower Restaurant has already sold out, but last we looked tickets were still available for its Rooftop Bar event. Tickets are $69, and guests will receive a glass of champers on arrival, plus a selection of canapes and cocktail food including BBQ pork buns and sushi. It’s on from 1-3pm, with a post-race after-party as well.

Electra House: Four Melbourne Cup party packages are available at Electra House, from a $160pp VIP food and drinks package including three-course meal and Pol Roger Champagne and a $110pp food and drinks package in the Level One restaurant, to a more casual $40pp celebration in the Chamber & Terrace Bar. The race that stops the nation will be shown on eight big screens, plus there will be race sweeps and door prizes.

Guests will be able to dine ‘Omakase style’ at the Level One Cup Day celebration.

Lady Burra Brewhouse: The Topham Mall microbrewery will serve up a three-course Cup Day menu including paella croquetas, char-grilled ribeye or salmon fillet, and chocolate mousse – plus a glass of bubbles or pint of Lady Burra beer. Tickets are $60.

Hains & Co: The famous race will be shown on a 2m x 3m screen at Gilbert Place small bar Hains & Co, with $20 entry or a $120 drinks package including food, beer, wine, cocktails and house-pour spirits between midday and 3pm. Post-Cup, it will also host the “Hains & Co Egg & Spoon Hobby Horse Race down Gilbert Place”.

Among the myriad other hotels, restaurants and bars offering special Melbourne Cup packages are Sean’s Kitchen, the Hilton Hotel and Intercontinental Adelaide.

Christine Manfield at The Pot – November 8

Australian chef and restaurateur Christine Manfield will be back in Adelaide in November for one of a series of national dinners promoting the second edition of her book Tasting India. The Adelaide dinner will take place at The Pot, with the $150 ticket price including the meal, an arrival cocktail and a signed copy of the book (details/bookings here). Manfield promises to “immerse her audience in colour, flavours and spice, creating dishes from heirloom recipes she’s collected during her travels to India”, including curry-leaf chicken, dal vada (lentil patties) and potato curry. McLaren Vale Meets Leigh Street – November 9

McLaren Vale winemakers will be popping up in Leigh Street from 4.30pm for this event showcasing trophy winners from the 2018 McLaren Vale Wine Show. The $20 entry includes five tastings and a take-home Plumm wine glass, with wines also being sold by the glass or bottle. Bookings here (no tickets will be available on the door).

Beer & Bubbles – November 17

East End Cellars is bringing the annual Beer & Bubbles celebration back to Vardon Avenue this November, with a selection of SA craft beers, ciders, sparkling wines and possibly even a “splash of gin”. East End eateries The Tasting Room, Mothervine, Nola and Lemongrass will all have pop-up shops serving food to go, with Skin Contact in charge of the tunes. Beer & Bubbles runs from midday until 5pm, and the tickets ($39 plus booking fee in advance or $45 on the day) include 15 tasting tokens.

Women in Wine – November 22 & December 12

The Wrattonbully region will be the focus of the next Women in Wine event at Electra House’s Level One restaurant, with guest winemakers Jane Richards of Eight at the Gate, Susie Harris of Land of Tomorrow, and Sue Bell of Bellwether Wines. It will be followed by a McLaren Vale dinner on December 12 featuring Corrina Wright from Oliver’s Taranga, Vanessa Altman from Switch Wines, and Gill Gordon-Smith from Fall from Grace. At the $75pp dinners, each winemaker matches one of their wines to a course from Level One’s modern Asian shared-plates menu, with the meal  followed by a Q&A session.

Gincident – December 1

“An event that happened due to one too many gins” is the tagline for this spirited celebration which will take place in Port Adelaide at the Flour Shed at Hart’s Mill. The Howling Owl will host the main bar, serving a selection of gin cocktails, while Fever Tree Tonic and Hains & Co will host a “garnish bar”. Festival-goers will have the opportunity to taste around 20 different gins from the likes of Prohibition, 36 Short, McHenry, Adelaide Hills Distillery and Never Never, with food vans serving bites outside and live entertainment. Gincident will run from midday until 9pm, with pre-sale tickets costing $25 ($35 on the door).
