Clare comes to town and a Baltic beer-tasting feast

Clare Valley at Plant 4 – April 29

Clare Valley winemakers and food producers will share the fruits of their labour at Plant 4 Bowden this Sunday from 10am-4pm, in the lead-up to the Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend next month. Wines will be available to buy by the glass or bottle, and entry is $20 (including wine glass and tasting tokens) – or $15 if you book before tomorrow. Details here. Also at Plant 4 on Sunday will be a Clare Valley Wine & Chocolate Masterclass, which will see Taylors wines matched with cuvée chocolate crafted by chocolatier and chef Deniz Karaca (bookings here).

Baltic Beer and Cider Tasting Feast – May 3

The Latvian Lunchroom at the Adelaide Central Market is hosting this meat lovers’ long-table event. Food such as smoked ribs, crumbed pork fillets with apple sauce, fried potatoes and sauerkraut will be served alongside Baltic-style Robetown beers (from pales to porters and stouts), LOBO ciders, Latvian vodka and liqueur tasters. Meet the Austrians by Hahndorf Hill Winery – May 2

Featuring Hahndorf Hill Winery – home of Gruner Veltliner specialists Larry Jacobs and Marc Dobson – this event at Rob Roy Hotel will showcase seven Austrian-inspired wines enjoyed over four “carefully and creatively matched” courses. Tickets are $95 plus booking fee or $80 for Roy’s Wine Society members.

Sheep, Goat and Pinot – May 3

The Smelly Cheese Shop is hosting this sheepish soiree at 25 Wright Street, where participants will learn about the flavour and health properties of sheep and goat’s milk cheeses paired with Pinot wines. Sheep, Goat and Pinot runs from 6.30-8.30pm and tickets are $80.

2KW Pol Roger meets Pierre Gimmonet dinner – May 8

Hosted by “Champagne commentator” Tyson Stelzer, this $220-a-head event at 2KW Bar and Restaurant will compare the unique styles and vintages of the Champagne houses of Pol Roger and Pierre Gimmonet. Details here.

Dinner and a roasting of Nick Ryan – May 18

Wild Saffron restaurant in Clare will host wine writer and columnist Nick Ryan for an evening of “compelling wines, great food and thought-provoking ideas”. Ryan will speak about the Clare Valley’s wine scene before inviting the audience to “roast” him on the views he expresses in his columns. Tickets include a two-course dinner and a Gourmet Glass.

Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend – May 18-21

More than 30 wineries, two breweries and regional restaurants will take part in this year’s Clare Valley Gourmet Weekend, with events including degustation lunches and dinners, the Gourmet Farmers’ Market, masterclasses and a wine sale. The popular Gourmet Hub will be relocated to the Clare Showgrounds and include wine from new boutique labels that don’t have cellar doors. See the full program here.

Urban Wine Walk – May 19

This self-guided wine-tasting experience offers the chance to sample wines from makers such as La Prova, Yeti & the Kokonut, Hither & Yon, The Lane Vineyard and Chaffey Bros Wine Co at West End bars including Udaberri, Electra House, Hains & Co, MYLK Bar and La Buvette. Tasting Bench Discovery Wine Dinner at Pranzo – May 19

Guests will be introduced to six wines from six different Australian wine regions – from an Old Vine Grenache from Yangarra in McLaren Vale to a Cabernet Merlot from Mountadam in Eden Valley – in this long-table experience at East End restaurant Pranzo. The menu comprises three courses (seasonal antipasto, slow-braised beef cheek and matured cheese) with tickets costing $130 or $110 for earlybirds (before April 20). Details here.

James Squire Degustation Dinner – May 23

Chef Shane Piercy will prepare four courses, plus snacks, paired with a selection of James Squire brews for this degustation dinner at The Hindley. Expect dishes such as a wood-oven baked Coorong mulloway and spiced Boston Bay mussel with tomato and saffron broth, and double-layered Callebaut chocolate tart with porter and coffee ice cream, accompanied by drinks including Four Wives Pilsner and Jack of Spades Porter. Sea & Vines – June 9-11

McLaren Vale cellar doors will present a range of events over the June long-weekend Sea & Vines festival, from intimate degustation dinners and long lunches, to live music, tasting experiences and family fun days. Highlights include The French Quarter at Hardy’s Tintara, with food from the Sneaky Pickle and New Orleans jazz from Atlantic Street Band, and a “Familial Feast” at d’Arrys Verandah.
