Savour the flavours of Croatia and Greece

Upcoming food and wine events in SA, including two festivals this weekend serving up traditional treats from Croatia and Greece, and locally sourced food at the Bowerbird Design Markets.

Festa – Croatian Food and Wine Festival – November 26

This event at the Croatian Sports Centre at Gepps Cross on Saturday is a chance to celebrate Croatian food, drink and culture. The menu will include seafood, spit-roasted meats, barbecue meats, cakes and traditional specialties such as chevapchichi (skinless sausage) in lepinja (flat bread) and “Croatian pita” (rolled savoury pastry). You can also taste Croatian beer, wine and spirits – Medica (honey liqueur), Šljivovica (plum brandy), Kruškovac (pear liqueur) and more – alongside SA offerings. Food at Bowerbird – November 25 to 27 

Bowerbird Design Markets return to the Wayville Pavilion at the Adelaide Showgrounds this weekend, offering an array of locally sourced food options alongside the many designer stalls. They include organic, handmade chocolate from Pana Chocolate, Sit Lo’s Vietnamese food, Four Seeds’ chocolate brownies and Dawn Patrol coffee. More stallholders can be found on the full programBowerbird runs from 4pm – 9pm on the Friday and 10am – 5pm Saturday and Sunday. Adults $5, Children free (Under 12).

Glendi Greek Festival – November 26 to 27

According to the festival’s official Facebook page, calories don’t count on Glendi weekend, so head to Bonython Park for Greek delights such as yiros, souvlaki, Greek salad, octopus, calamari, fish, spanakopita, baklava and crepes from stallholders such as Bab’s Greek BBQ, Corinthians, Crepe Bar and Greek Palace. Glendi Greek Festival, which includes live music, dance and children’s events, is on Saturday from 12pm to 12am and Sunday from 12pm to 10.30pm. Tickets are $12 for adults, $9 for children (under fives free) and concessions and $30 for a family pass, with an early bird special of $7 on Saturday from 12pm-3pm.

Palais on Hawker grand opening – November 27

Craft beer importer and wholesaler Palais Distributing Co is hosting a Sunday session from midday until 4pm to celebrate the opening of its new Palais on Hawker tasting room and store at 28a Hawker Street in Brompton. Along with all the beers on offer, there will be live entertainment and food. Details here.

Wine Wednesdays at Pepe Cucina – November and December

Enjoy a night out at Pepe Cucina at Burnside Village to meet some of the state’s best winemakers and learn why their products are a good match for Salvatore Pepe’s Italian flavours. Guests will have the opportunity to try a range of wines on arrival, with a complimentary glass of their chosen wine served to them when they sit down for their meal. Wine Wednesdays will be held on November 23, November 30 and December 7. Tastings run from 6.30pm until 8pm and are open only to guests dining at the restaurant. Champagne and Sparkling Tasting – November 28

Join Apothecary for its annual Champagne and Sparkling Tasting this month. The event runs from 6pm to 7.30pm and will include a range of canapes. Cost is $58 per person. To book, call 8212 9099.
