Brut Force

Oct 06, 2015, updated Nov 10, 2015

The festive season is fast approaching, and the Bruts will be sold in force – Brut Champagne that is. It’s synonymous with special occasions and celebrations,  but for many bubbles lovers any excuse will do (a day ending in ‘y’ perhaps)!  Without question , Brut is by far the most popular Champagne style sold around the world today.  Seen on numerous wine labels, the direct French translation of Brut is ‘dry or unsweetened’ and denotes a dry wine style with typically no more than 12 grams of sugar per litre.

However, Champagnes have not always be made in a refreshingly dry Brut style.  Prior to the 19th century, French sparkling wines were made significantly sweeter than our modern examples, sometimes reaching an incredible 250-300 grams of sugar per litre.  These were traditionally drunk as dessert style wines after a meal, rather than as a table wine with the meal.  Considerable amounts of additional sugar were added after the second fermentation to help create the sweeter style favoured by the French consumers of the time.

In 1874, famous Reims Champagne house Pommery bucked Champagne tradition of the day and invented the first Brut Champagne, in response to requests from Queen Victoria for a less cloying drink.  Although Madame Pommery’s idea was initially met with a combination of sarcasm and disbelief, the drier flavours favoured by the English market created an exporting boom, and completely revolutionised the Champagne industry.

Today, Pommery has an extensive international presence with one of the highest selling Bruts in the world, found in more than over 100 countries.  The stunning Champagne Estate has also become famous for its beautiful cellars & its annual contemporary art exhibition, attended by more than 130,000 visitors every year.

Thanks to Madame Pommery’s innovation, Brut Champagne became an exceptionally versatile beverage that could be enjoyed either as an aperitif before meals to stimulate the appetite, or as the perfect accompaniment to a plethora of sumptuous dishes, particularly seafood and savoury fare.  The ideal combination of acidity and carbonation cuts through oils and fats, allowing Brut to easily pair with most foods.  Although, the classic matching of Oysters & Champagne is hard to beat.

Any occasion celebrated day or night with Champagne can be as vivacious and cheerful as the wine itself.   All it takes is a ceremonial pop!
