Autumn Picks at Vintage Time!

Apr 02, 2015

Every year around this time wineries breathe a sigh of relief.  The high intensity of vintage time in the vineyards is almost over for another year.  Considering South Australia is the country’s largest wine producing state, this is of particular importance to us.  From the backpackers and temps who try their hand at grape-picking for a season, to the horticulturalists meticulously tending to their crops, and the many winemakers feverishly studying weather patterns and Baumé levels (sugar concentration) to choose the optimal moment to harvest; it all comes together in a symphony of organised chaos. Once that crucial decision has been made to harvest, it’s all hands on deck until the last grape has been picked!

To celebrate the end of vintage, the Barossa has the multi-faceted and aptly named Barossa Vintage Festival.  Festival goers can revel in ample choices of activities such as art exhibitions, wine tastings & tours, concerts and of course the famous street parade which began back in 1948.  Meanwhile around the state there are many smaller public and industry events also raising a glass to another successful year.

An alternative way to celebrate vintage festivities is grab a local SA bottle of wine and toast to all the hard work and numerous people involved in the production of that bottle which made it possible for you to sit back and enjoy a glass!  So with that sentiment in mind, here’s 5 top value wine picks for Autumn from our staff in no particular order (normal retail prices listed):

  • Bleasdale The Broad-Side Shiraz Cabernet Malbec 2013 – $16.99 (Trophy & Gold Sydney Royal Wine Show 2015 – Awarded Best Shiraz Blend)

  • Barratt The Bonython Pinot Noir 2010 – $24.99
  • Shingleback Kiss Me Kate Chardonnay – $14.99
