Director Sophie Hyde’s ground-breaking film 52 Tuesdays and Jason Sweeney’s The Dead Speak Back are vying for the Best Feature award in this year’s 2014 South Australian Screen Awards.

52 Tuesdays, which premiered during the Adelaide Film Festival last year, centres on the tense relationship between a teenage girl and her mother, who is transitioning from female to male. Filmed chronologically every Tuesday over the course of a year, the Closer Productions feature has already won accolades overseas, including a Crystal Bear award at the Berlin International Film Festival and best director in the world category at 2014 Sundance.

The film-making team behind The Dead Speak Back also took an innovative approach, working on a shoestring budget with no script and a methodology described as “DIY progressive production”. The story follows a spirit medium following in the footsteps of a missing boy who may never be found.

The full list of 2014 SA Screen Awards nominations was announced today and also encompasses the categories of Best Short Film, Best Documentary, Best Web Series, Best Animation, Best Music Video, Best Comedy, Best Drama and Best Non-Narrative film, as well as a number of craft awards.

Winners will be announced at a gala awards night on May 16 at the Mercury Cinema, with the Best of SASA Screenings to take place from May 17-25.
