Crossing boundaries: WOMADelaide reveals full 2018 program

WOMADelaide has added more than 50 extra acts to complete a 2018 line-up spanning everything from Israeli hip-hop, New York gypsy punk and Scandinavian folk to Indigenous rap and vintage Aussie rock.

Highlights among the latest additions include American jazz fusion bass guitarist, singer and producer Thundercat, who has released three albums and contributed to Grammy-winning releases by both Kendrick Lamar and Kamasi Washington, and Israeli “vocal experimentist” Victoria Hanna, who performs Aramaic hip-hop and raps on ancient Hebrew texts.

Other international acts include American gypsy punk band Gogol Bordello, Chicago-based eight-piece Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, Bulgarian polyphonic singers Eva Quartet, Zanzibar mini orchestra Rajab Suleiman & Kithara, Scandinavian folk duo My Bubba, Cameroon musician Blick Bassy (who blends blues, Bossa Nova and folk) and China’s TAO Dance Theater.

WOMADelaide director Ian Scobie AM says the program for the world music festival, to be held in Botanic Park from March 9-12, crosses “many new boundaries, and countries as varied as Ghana, Sweden, Cape Verde, Turkey, Cameroon and PNG, as well as highlighting major projects in dance, circus and the visual arts”.

“The 2018 festival is a true celebration of the wealth of musical and creative invention from some of the world’s most original, brilliant and adventurous artists.”

Australian group Tex, Don and Charlie – which comprises Tex Perkins from The Cruel Sea, Don Walker from Cold Chisel and guitarist Charlie Owen – will be performing on the back of their third album, You Don’t Know Lonely, released this year.

Young Indigenous singer, rapper and dancer Baker Boy (known in Arnhem Land as the “fresh new prince”), NSW-based men’s choir Dustyesky (which performs Russian folk songs), hip-hop collaboration Remi x Sampa (Remi Kolawole and Sampa The Great), Mama Kin’s new project Mama Kin Spender and Hiatus Kaiyote’s Nai Palm are among other Australian acts bound for Botanic Park.

Previously announced WOMADelaide 2018 highlights include “Queen of the sitar” Anoushka Shankar, Mali desert blues group Tinariwen, US saxophonist Kamasi Washington, producer Mista Savona’s Havana Meets Kingston project, and Australian acts The Avalanches and Dan Sultan
