Poem: Ode to the FruChoc

Today’s ode to a South Australian food “icon” comes from Shelda Rathmann, a teacher of English and creative writing at Eynesbury Senior College.

Ode to the FruChoc

you icon
your luscious flavours
linger, tantalise.
Fruit centres
of apricot and peach
melt in my mouth
like summer showers
and choc-coated dreams.

Eve would have
envied this feat
of modern invention,
discarded the apple
for a succulent,
bag of FruChocs
and devoured them
in an instant.

Shelda Rathmann teaches at Eynesbury Senior College. She has also taught in South Africa, Zimbabwe and the UK. She was the editor for “Oasis, a Stage in the Journey”, a poetry anthology published in 2008 for Adelaide’s Catherine House for women’s supported accommodation. In any spare time, Shelda goes to mosaics classes.

Readers’ original and unpublished poems up to 30 lines can be emailed, with postal address, to A poetry book will be awarded to each contributor.
