Poems: transfiguration & in the bush

Sally Hunter’s interest in the environment is expressed in these two poems which cast light on the still beauty of nature and the bush.

transfiguration

pear-shaped autumn tree
grades soft discs from pale to flame
as it grows high

sideways afternoon light
diffuses the lower parts
penetrating
and illuminating from within

like simply stated stillness

in the bush

white powder
of flat bark
on white tree

stickiness sparkles
on sundews
gathered in tightly
as if with drawstring

melaleuca flower softness sits still

green leaves wrap the ground
leading up to jewelled ecosystem
where light catches corners
a leaf
a twig

a flower

tiny orchids salute

Sally Hunter has published a collection of poetry The Structure of Light and a biography You Can’t Keep A Good Man Down: From Parkinson’s to a New Life With Deep Brain Stimulation. She has her BSc in Biology and MSc in Environmental Studies and has prepared papers for the environment movement.

Readers’ original and unpublished poems up to 30 lines can be emailed, with postal address, to [email protected]. A poetry book will be awarded to each contributor.
