While the Adelaide Fringe is set to launch its program for the February 19 – March 21 festival this Friday, the Garden won’t be making its full program announcement until January 13.

In unveiling 24 shows in the Rundle Park hub’s “program teaser” today, co-director Michelle Buxton says the COVID-19 pandemic has created huge challenges for everyone trying to present performing arts events.

She says the team behind the Garden of Unearthly Delights has worked to redesign the site for next year to ensure it is “both full of energy and joyous encounters, and COVID-safe for our audience, artists and team”.

“In 2021 the Garden will be more spacious, with additional, comfortable and socially distanced seating areas.

“All venue, bar and food stall queues have been designed to enable social distancing. The site and venues will be cleaned regularly by our dedicated cleaning team and we have additional exit and entry points to ensure less crowding at the Garden front gate.”

As always, it seems comedy will be a major drawcard of the hub’s 2021 program, with the early announcement including The Umbilical Brothers, who will perform in the Garden for the first time with their show Distraction; Effie, with new show Hello Good Thanks – Better Out Than In, and musical-comedy favourites Tripod.

Other comedians on the program include Jimeoin, Nurse Georgie Carroll, Anne Edmonds, Lloyd Langford, Dilruk Jayasinha, Lano & Woodley, Nath Valvo, Sam Simmons, Tom Ballard and Tommy little.

Multi-ARIA-award-winning singer-songwriters Kate Ceberano and Katie Noonan are highlights of the Garden musical line-up announced today, alongside The Black Sorrows, blues-rock singer-songwriter and guitarist Nathan Cavaleri and musical-comedy group The Real Housewives Choir.

For those who like to join in the singing – with a live band and the anonymity offered by a like-minded crowd – the popular Massaoke Oz will also be returning to Rundle Park in 2021.

Other early-release GOUD offerings are cabaret show The Aspie Hour (an irreverent cabaret that seeks to blow away misconceptions about Asperger’s Syndrome), magician Dom Chambers’ A Boy and His Deck, and family shows Amazing Drumming Monkeys, Monski Mouse’s Baby Disco Dance Hall and the Teeny Tiny Stevies.

All Adelaide Fringe hubs and venues are working to adapt their spaces so they can offer COVID-safe programs in 2021, with artists also innovating to offer different types of shows, including outdoor, drive-in and livestreamed experiences.

More than 800 shows had been registered by the time the print program deadline closed early last month, but online artist registrations will remain open up right up to the festival.

A selection of the GOUD shows announced today will be on sale from December 18.
