Set high on The 360 All Stars stage, Perry fills the room with beats and tunes, but in this intimate show at The Gallery above The Hindley the magic of his performance becomes mesmerising.

The WA artist uses only his voice, a microphone, a loop station and effects pedal to create layer upon layer, building tracks that get into the bodies of his audience.

With haunting melodies, tingling harmonies, heavy bass and beat-boxed rhythms all created live on stage, it’s impossible to stop yourself moving with the beats. But the end of the performance I attended, audience members were unable to resist the urge to get up and dance.

Performing a mix of original work and classic tunes from the likes of The Prodigy, Massive Attack and Groove Armada, Perry is spellbinding to watch as he builds beats, rhythms and melodies until all of a sudden you recognise an old favourite.

The added delight of Sam Perry Live comes from his genuine stage presence. While it’s his voice that makes each sound, he uses his full body and soul to create the performance; his gestures and actions feel just as integral to creating each layer as his manipulation of the technology, and his sparkling smile at the end of each tune suggest he’s having as much fun as the audience.

The opportunity to catch Sam Perry Live in such an intimate venue is an absolute treat for Adelaide Fringe-goers.
