Review: A Night at the Musicals

One part drag show, one part homage (of the cheekiest kind) to musical theatre and one part impromptu banter between two seasoned drag queens extraordinaire. Welcome to A Night at the Musicals. ★★★★½

Starring Le Gateau Chocolat and Jonny Woo, this show brings glitter, laughs and plenty of surprises.

With trunk-loads of awards from several continents between them, the two performers are a match made in heaven.  But this doesn’t mean they don’t point out their differences to the audience; in addition to the obvious physical appearance, the also vary in their strengths.

Le Gateau’s powerful operatic tones command attention. Yet he reels himself in before Woo has the chance to, with hilarious side notes and improvised touches.

The very leggy Woo (I’m sure he won’t mind me saying that) has impeccable timing. His outrageous lip-syncing of a Les Misérables number had audience members in stitches.

With a brilliant pace and song selection sure to please musical-theatre aficionados, this show is a must-see for fans of the genre.

Being encouraged to sing along and join in made the performance all the merrier, but they could do with a bigger venue. With all the singing and jiving during a particularly lively Grease tune, I was a little unnerved about the stability of the stand in which we sat.

A Night at the Musicals is rich in creativity, yet more subtle than you might expect in terms of set and costume design. Think R-rated Glee meets drag meets cabaret. In other words, a sensational display of glitzy self-expression with A-class wit. Do go along!

Four-and-a-half stars

A Night at the Musicals, presented by Strut and Fret Production House, is in Studio 7 at the Garden of Unearthly Delights until March 13.
