Cabaret Fringe Festival

Putting a contemporary twist on Broadway’s Ziegfeld Follies, high-kicking show Frolic & Follies is being presented at Gluttony’s Masonic Lodge tonight and tomorrow as part of the Cabaret Fringe. Other shows to catch during the weekend and coming week include Idris Stanton’s Wham Glam Circus Man, Shake It – Best of Burlesque, Isaac Lomman’s Hypnosis [Live] and circus-cabaret act Papillon Unplugged. Adelaide vocalist Dennis Russell and the Tunisian Nights Little Big Band are also presenting a night of swing music at the Arkaba Hotel tonight as part of the festival, which continues until June 29. A tongue-in-cheek look at musical theatre and body image by Maeve Marsden and Libby Wood (Fat Musicals: A Body of Work) and Jersey Boys’ star Bobby Fox’s heartwarming show combining Irish music, dancing, storytelling and song (The Irish Boy) are among Cabaret Festival program highlights this weekend. Other upcoming shows with tickets still available include homegrown rocker Max Savage’s tribute to Adelaide’s late-night underbelly Nobody Knows My Name (more about that here) and dancer and choreographer Larissa McGowan’s odd to pop star Cher. You can also see festival artistic director Julia Zemiro channeling her alter ego Bronya in Bronya’s Variety Hour at late-night club The 11 O’Clock Number in the Famous Spiegeltent tonight and tomorrow night, with the promise of special guests, spontaneity and hilarity. Choirboys

Australian pub rock icons Choirboys are playing a gig at the Governor Hindmarsh on Saturday. Audience members can expect a string of the band’s classic songs – “Run to Paradise”, “Boys Will Be Boys”, “Never Gonna Die” and more – as well as covers of six Creedence Clearwater Revival hits performed in homage to the American rock band that influenced their first four-track EP. Tender Napalm

Adelaide’s Scuti Productions is presenting the South Australian premiere of Tender Napalm – a play about the relationship between two individuals and the violent world that surrounds them – from June 19 to June 29 at Holden Street Theatres. Written by British playwright Philip Ridley, directed by Rachael Williams, and featuring an original score by Adelaide guitarist Moses Monro, Tender Napalm is performed by Mark Healy and Carol Lawton (pictured) and described by Scuti as an “explosive, poetic and brutal” work that re-examines and redefines the language of love. End of the Rainbow

Featuring 10 of actress and singer Judy Garland’s greatest songs, End of the Rainbow tracks the star’s final months as she prepares for a series of concerts in London. The play has been performed around the world, with this production by the State Theatre Company of SA marking the directorial debut of resident artist Elena Carapetis, who told InDaily audiences can expect to see a side of Garland they’ve never seen before: “It’s fun and it’s camp and there’s songs and there’s heartbreak.” The play features Helen Dallimore as the Hollywood star, with an elaborate set and costumes, plus a live band. End of the Rainbow is playing at the Royalty Theatre until June 22, as part of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival. Silence with Your ASO

Coinciding with International Day of Yoga on June 21, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra is staging a concert at Grainger Studio celebrating meditation and symphony. Introduced by Rainer Jozeps (who told InDaily he meditates every day), the 60-minute event will feature 43 ASO musicians playing works by Debussy, Grieg, Elgar and Pärt, and will culminates with avant-garde composer John Cage’s 4’33”. The two performances, at 1pm and 6pm on June 21, will explore the dynamics and space between sound, with audiences encouraged to enter a meditative state in their seats or lie on yoga mats that can be reserved when booking tickets.
