Stomp – Entertainment Centre

Broadway percussion group Stomp returns to Adelaide on Wednesday for a seven-performance run at the Entertainment Centre. Eight performers will use an array of ordinary objects – including bin lids, hammers, kitchen sinks and shopping trolleys – to create a soundtrack inspired by the commotion of everyday life.

First Fridays – Art Gallery of South Australia

Artist Luke Thurgate will present a sketching session and Adelaide Afrobeat Collective will play a fusion of jazz, funk and West African drumming in the Sculpture Courtyard at the Art Gallery’s monthly First Fridays event tonight from 5-9pm. Visitors will be able to take guided tours of the Impressionist paintings from the Musée d’Orsay in Paris – on show in the Elder Wing until July 29 – and the 2018 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art.  Read InDaily reviewer Katherine Arguile’s article on Colours of Impressionism here.

Grace & Grandeur – Adelaide Town Hall

The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra will perform Mendelssohn’s Violin Concerto and Bruckner’s Symphony No.7 at the Adelaide Town Hall tonight and tomorrow night. Australian violinist and Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s emerging artist-in-association Grace Clifford (pictured above) will perform Mendelssohn’s work with the orchestra. Adelaide Cabaret Fringe

More than 45 events will be presented across 15 venues during the Adelaide Cabaret Fringe Festival, which begins tonight with the Opening Night Gala at The German Club, where guests will be entertained by a selection of acts. Other festival highlights include Allegria After Dark – an a capella performance in the underground Adelaide Treasury tunnels, electronic multimedia artist Tomás Ford, a rock & pop swings show with Adelaide Big Band, and American singer Pamela Shaw. Adelaide Cabaret Festival

Singer Libby O’Donovan will perform at this year’s Adelaide Cabaret Festival.

The Adelaide Cabaret Festival begins next Friday, with a two-week program featuring 52 performances from local and international artists. This year’s theme Eyes Open explores cabaret as a mode of storytelling. Festival highlights include Orange is the New Black’s Lea DeLaria, American diva Patti LuPone, Adelaide singer Libby O’Donovan, Australian band The Cat Empire, Australian radio presenter and singer Em Rusciano, and scientist comedian Lawrence Leung. Terrestrial – Space Theatre 

Written by Fleur Kilpatrick and part of State Theatre Company’s mainstream program, this play tells the story of Liddy, a teenage alien obsessive who arrives in a rural town seeking escape. An outsider, Liddy falls into a friendship with a witty 15-year-old who helps her embrace difference. Artistic director Geordie Brookman describes Terrestrial as a “tender yet twisting tale of social dislocation in regional Australia”. Read InDaily‘s review here. Performances run through to Sunday.

If You Can Learn to Fake Authenticity You’ve Got It Made – FELTSpace

Adelaide playwright Rebecca Meston will present her new public theatre show If You Can Learn to Fake Authenticity You’ve Got It Made in FELTSpace Gallery’s shopfront window tonight from 7pm. The three-hour performance is split into six choreographed vignettes that explore the theme of real versus fake in the online world. Read InDaily’s interview with Meston here.

Caligula – Holden Street Theatres

Red Phoenix Theatre is presenting its new show Caligula, written by Albert Camus, at Holden Street Theatres. Described as a “darkly comic drama”, Caligula tells the story of a “charismatic but dangerously unpredictable” Roman emperor who tries to understand the meaning of life. Performances run until Sunday. 

German Film Festival – Palace Nova Cinemas

The German Film Festival is currently on at Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas, featuring 32 Australian premieres. Highlights include Heart of Stone – a dark fairytale set in a rural community in the Black Forest; The Final Journey – a drama which follows a 92-year-old former German officer as he searches for his long-lost love, and comedy-drama My Brother Simple (Read InDaily’s review here). Sarah Blasko – The Gov

Australian singer Sarah Blasko will head to The Governor Hindmarsh’s Main Room next Friday night as part of her national tour. Blasko will perform songs from her latest album, Depth of Field, for the first time in Adelaide. Doors open at 7.30pm. Find out more here.

Julie Fragar workshop – ACE Open

Brisbane-based oil painter Julie Fragar will share her talent with art enthusiasts next Sunday as part of contemporary art gallery ACE Open’s new series of practical art workshops. Fragar, whose work features in the Art Gallery of South Australia and Art Gallery of New South Wales, will discuss her work and lead a practical painting masterclass as part of her Narrative and the Personal Archive in Composite Painting workshop. Attendees are asked to bring along a series of photos or images from their own personal archive, which will be the inspiration of their own paintings. Find out more here.

The Great Moscow Circus – Glenelg, Port Adelaide, Elizabeth

Moscow Circus returns to Adelaide after a five-year break with a series of new acts, including “The Extreme Wheel of Death”, motorcycle cage riders and hire-wire-walkers. The circus will travel to Wigley Reserve in Glenelg, Hart’s Mill in Port Adelaide and Ridley Green Reserve in Elizabeth as part of its Adelaide-leg, which begins next Friday and runs through to June 8.
