What’s On: Behind the curtain at the AFC, films and tunes in the vines

Events and shows over the weekend and week ahead, including an open day at the Adelaide Festival Centre, the Fleurieu Film Festival, an ASO George Michael tribute show, RnB Vine Days at McLaren Vale and Adelaide Fringe.

Open Day – Adelaide Festival Centre

Adelaide Festival Centre will lift the curtain on its front and backstage areas at an open day this Sunday. As part of a self-guided tour, visitors will be able to catch a glimpse of the backstage and technical areas, dressing rooms and the recently installed Walk of Fame. Access tours for people with limited mobility are also available at 12pm, 1pm and 2pm. There will be roving performances, meet-and-greet opportunities with the cast and characters from Windmill Theatre Company’s Grug and the Rainbow and the upcoming musical The Wizard of Oz, and live performances featuring the Silver Jubilee organ and State Opera. Fleurieu Film Festival

The annual Fleurieu short film festival returns this month with the theme “fire.” Watch the 10 finalist films while enjoying local produce and wine at Serafino Winery at McLaren Vale from 6.30pm tonight (Friday). There will also be live music, including spaghetti western group The Young and the Wrestlers, modern folk singer-songwriter Naomi Keyte and duo Lucy & Harry. Past and present Fleurieu Film Festival best films will be screened on Saturday at the Yankalilla Golf Club. Ben Folds – Festival Theatre

Piano-pop singer-songwriter Ben Folds will perform his Paper Aeroplane Request Tour at the Festival Theatre tonight. In the show’s first half, Folds will perform tracks spanning his 23-year-long career. For the second half, he will randomly select songs requested by audience members and written on paper planes launched onto the stage. Details here.

RnB Vine Days – Leconfield Wines, McLaren Vale

TLC will perform at Leconfield Wines at McLaren Vale this Sunday.

Nineties R&B icons TLC and Boyz II Men will headline the South Australian run of the RnB Vine Days winery concert series, happening at Leconfield Wines at McLaren Vale this Sunday. They will perform alongside Jamaican-American DJ and singer Shaggy, DJ Horizon and Yo! Mafia as part of an Australian-first concert series. Last time we checked tickets were still available but selling fast.

Shun Yen Performing Arts – Festival Theatre

New York-based Shun Yen Performing Arts company returns to Adelaide on Tuesday (February 13) with a new production promising a “journey to ancient China’s divine civilisation”. The performance combines an orchestra and singers with dance and colourful costumes, with performances at 1.30pm and 7.30pm. Get a taste of what’s in store here.

Celtic Woman – Entertainment Centre

Celtic music lovers will be treated to the angelic voices of 2017 Grammy nominee Celtic Woman when the vocal group performs at the Entertainment Centre on Tuesday. Accompanied by a group of musicians and dancers, the performance will celebrate Irish music and heritage, bringing a modern spin to the traditional music style. Details here.

Australian rock chart-topper Jon Stevens will head to The Governor Hindmarsh next Thursday to perform a selection of tracks from his 2016 album, Starlight, co-produced by Eurythmics musician and songwriter Dave Stewart. Doors open at 7.30pm, details here.

George Michael: Listen to Your Heart with the ASO – Festival Theatre

Adelaide Symphony Orchestra will pay a symphonic tribute to pop star George Michael next Thursday and Friday to mark 30 years since he released his seminal debut solo album, Faith. Hugh Sheridan, Rob Mills, Casey Donovan, Andrew De Silva and Bobby Fox will join the orchestra on stage to perform a selection of George Michael chart-toppers. Moonlight Cinema – Botanic Park

The Spice Girls film Spice World will take you back to the’ 90s tonight at the Moonlight Cinema in Botanic Park. Also showing over the coming week are Coco (Saturday), Lady Bird (Sunday), Breakfast at Tiffany’s (Tuesday), The Greatest Showman (Wednesday) and Call Me By Your Name (Thursday). Adelaide Fringe

The 2018 Adelaide Fringe opens next Friday night with the Tindo Utpurndee (sunset ceremony) at 8pm on the SA Museum lawns followed by the switching on of the Parade of Light projections on significant North Terrace buildings, and a street party with artist performances, night markets, food and wine. This year’s Fringe comprises around 1220 events including comedy, music, theatre, visual art, magic and children’s shows.
