Pontoon Summer Series

The Pontoon on the River Torrens is hosting acoustic music sessions, jazz nights, DJs and movie screenings throughout January. This weekend’s line-up includes DJs Audioporn / DJ Dizz (Friday), Matt Sammut / Kai (Saturday) and James Curd / Max Rivers (Sunday). Tuesday is movie night, Dusty Lee (The Wanderers) will play on Wednesday, and Jazz It Up perform on Thursday. Moonlight Cinema – Botanic Park

Australian director Warwick Thornton’s acclaimed new period western Sweet Country, set in the Northern Territory outback in 1929, will have an advance screening at the Moonlight Cinema in Botanic Park this Sunday. Also showing over the coming week are Bad Moms 2 (tonight), Molly’s Game (Saturday), The Greatest Showman (Tuesday), The Disaster Artist (Wednesday) and Star Wars: The Last Jedi (Thursday). Green Day’s American Idiot ­– Her Majesty’s Theatre

Featuring every song from Green Day’s 2004 album American Idiot (and more), this rock musical is described as “the story of three boyhood friends, each searching for meaning in a post 9/11 Trumpian suburbia, discovering love, loss, drugs, sex and rock and roll along the way”. Starring musicians Phil Jamieson (of Grinspoon) and Adalita (Magic Dirt), Green Day’s American Idiot is playing at Her Majesty’s Theatre from tonight until January 28. Painters and Dockers / No Fixed Address – The Gov

Pioneering Aboriginal reggae-rock band and SA Music Hall of Fame inductees No Fixed Address are returning to their home town for a gig in the front bar of the Governor Hindmarsh on Saturday (they’re also playing at the Art Gallery of SA’s Sunday sessions – details below). And tonight at The Gov you can catch Melbourne-based rock legends Painters and Dockers, whose live shows promise “an orgy of outrageous exuberance”.

Tarnanthi Sunday Sessions – Art Gallery of SA

To celebrate the final weeks of the Tarnanthi exhibition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, the gallery is holding free Sunday sessions with live music from 2-4pm. This Sunday’s session will feature reggae-rock group No Fixed Address, hip-hop artist Eskatology and Gunditjmara singer-songwriter Corey Theatre, while Emily Wurramara and The Bec Gollan Trio will perform next Sunday. On Tuesday, Tarnanthi artistic director Nici Cumpston will also give a free lunchtime talk in Gallery 25 to farewell the exhibition, which closes on January 28. Walk of Fame Gala – Festival Theatre

The Adelaide Festival Centre is celebrating its new Walk of Fame promenade, along the River Torrens side of the centre, with a gala featuring a line-up of artists including Tim Minchin, Todd McKenney, Greta Bradman, James Morrison, Rhonda Burchmore, Slava Grigoryan, Beccy Cole and Nancye Hayes. McKenney will emcee the Walk of Fame Gala, with performances at 1pm and 8pm today in the Festival Theatre.

Sunset Sessions – Adelaide Festival Centre

This series of free live music sessions on the Adelaide Festival Centre Riverdeck and Northern Promenade continues until February 17. The weekend you can catch soul/roots/alt-country singer-songwriter Kelly Menhennett (January 19) and soul/blues musician Eric “Tooch” Santucci (January 20), with both performances beginning at 6.20pm. Other musicians include Cosmo Thundercat (January 27), Ryan Martin John (February 9), Sitara (February 10), and Alison Coppe and David Mazzarelli (February 16); full line-up here.

Foo Fighters – Coopers Stadium

Currently touring on the back of their ninth studio album, Concrete and Gold, multi-Grammy-winning rock band the Foo Fighters are playing at Coopers Stadium next Tuesday night (January 23). They’re joined on tour by American alt-rockers Weezer, and the Adelaide concert will be opened by Aussie punk-rock group Amyl and the Sniffers. Tickets were still available last we looked; details here.

Toyer – Bakehouse Theatre

A “cat-and-mouse psychological thriller”, Toyer is a contemporary American play which purports to address “humanity’s vast ability to manipulate one another, our moral lawlessness, our wondrous gift for lying and the awful power of charisma”. This production, directed by Tony Knight, is playing at the Bakehouse Theatre until January 27.
