Moonlight Cinema – Botanic Park

New fright flick It, based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, will be one of the first films off the rank when the Moonlight Cinema returns to Botanic Park this weekend. It is showing on Saturday night, with other screenings including The Mountain Between Us (tonight), Kingsman: The Golden Circle (Sunday), Home Again (Tuesday) and Murder on the Orient Express (Wednesday). There will also be an advance showing next Thursday of Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Moonlight Cinema runs until February 18; full program here.

First Fridays – Art Gallery of SA

Indigenous hip-hop musicians Radical Son and Eskatology will perform at tonight’s First Fridays after-hours event at the gallery. Running from 5pm until 9pm, it will also include guided tours of the Tarnanthi exhibition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art, and a demonstration of moves like breakdancing, krumping and body-popping by Hip-Hop Project.

Digs at Bigs / Electric Avenue street party – Biggies

Adelaide vinyl collectors and DJs will be selling records spanning funk, soul, disco, boogie and hip-hip at the Digs at Bigs boutique record fair from 1pm-4pm on Saturday in the basement and laneway at Biggies at Bertram, Grenfell Street. DJs will be spinning tunes throughout the event, and the vinyl theme will continue at night with the Electric Avenue street party, which promises “a fine selection of funk, soul, disco and boogie grooves”. ASO’s Beauty & Defiance – Town Hall

Pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk will join the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra to perform Rachmaninov’s Second Concerto in this Master Series concert tonight (Friday) and Saturday night. Nicholas Carter will conduct the orchestra in a program that also includes Sibelius’s En Saga and Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony. Details here.

State Theatre’s Vale – Dunstan Playhouse

The State Theatre Company of SA’s final play of the year – described by playwright Nicki Bloom as “a dark and brutal comedy that turns into a Greek tragedy” – takes place on New Year’s Eve. Hotel mogul Joseph Vale is celebrating with his wife, their daughter and her boyfriend, but things take a turn with the arrival of an uninvited guest. Vale is at the Dunstan Playhouse until Sunday. ADT’s construct – Space Theatre

Ten years after contemporary dance star Tanja Liedtke’s sudden death, the Adelaide-based Australian Dance Theatre is honouring her memory by remounting her final work, construct, a rigorous and humorous exploration of the concept of building. InDaily reviewer Greg Elliott describes it as a night of comedy, mayhem, sensitivity, hope and heartbreak. Performances continue until Saturday at the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Space Theatre.

Classics Unwrapped: Party Time – Town Hall

Soprano Alexandra Flood will perform with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra at the final concert of the year in its popular Classics Unwrapped series. With Guy Noble as conductor/presenter, Party Time will feature bite-sized bits of classical music, including Shostakovich’s Festive Overture, Strauss’s On the Beautiful Blue Danube and Leroy Anderson’s Sleigh Ride. The concert will be at the Town Hall next Wednesday (December 6) and will feature Lord Mayor Martin Haese as special guest.

Culture Club – AEC

Boy George and Culture Club are bringing their national tour to the Adelaide Entertainment Centre next Thursday (December), with tickets for the show still available. They will be supported by Hoseah Partsch (from The Voice), Tom Bailey (Thompson Twins) and Eurogliders.

The Waifs – The Gov

After celebrating their 25th anniversary by releasing their eighth studio album, Ironbark, and completing a national tour – including performing at WOMADelaide – The Waifs are back on the road and will perform a gig next Tuesday at the Governor Hindmarsh. They’ll be supported by Yearlings, with doors opening at 7.30pm.

Tarnanthi

The Art Gallery of SA’s Tarnanthi exhibition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island art, which continues until January 28, features more than 40 new commissions, including the Kulata Tjuta (Many Spears) installation comprising more than 550 kulata hanging in a cloud formation above hand-carved piti (wooden bowls).

Paolo Sebastian X – Art Gallery of SA

This exhibition celebrates the 10th anniversary of South Australian designer Paul Vasileff’s celebrated couture label Paolo Sebastian, with hand-crafted gowns from the past on show alongside the gallery’s collection of historic European art. Paolo Sebastian X is in galleries 12–16 until December 10, with free entry.
