Macbeth – Dunstan Playhouse

State Theatre Company’s new adaptation of Shakespeare’s tragedy Macbeth opens with preview performances from tonight at the Dunstan Playhouse. The company’s Ensemble has transported the play to a contemporary urban setting, and explores its “commonality with the brutality of modern warfare”. Fist Full of Rock – Thebarton Theatre

The 2017 line-up for Fist Full of Rock sees rock veterans Hoodoo Gurus and You Am I – who have 19 studio albums between them – joining forces with indie rock musician Adalita. The tour touches down at the Thebarton Theatre tonight (Friday), with tickets still available.

Adam Harvey and Beccy Cole – Adelaide & Tanunda

The Great Country Songbook Volume II tour sees Harvey and Cole performing songs from their first album together, including classic duets made famous by musicians such as Johnny Cash and June Carter, George Jones and Tammy Wynette, and Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. There are two SA performances: tonight (Friday) at Her Majesty’s Theatre and on Saturday at the Barossa Arts & Convention Centre. Tickets here.

Double Happiness Concert – Elder Hall

It’s hard to resist a concert with a title like this. The result of a collaboration between the Australian String Quartet and visiting student string musicians from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, Double Happiness will feature string quartet and octet works by Mendelssohn, Beethoven, Bartók, Schubert and Ross Edwards.  It’s at Elder Hall from 3.30pm on Saturday. Raj House Open Day Markets

Raj House, the home of Adelaide’s Feast Festival, is opening its doors to the public on Sunday (August 27) with music, art and market stalls selling items ranging from designer homewares to retro fashion. The market day (details here) will give people the chance to explore different spaces in the three-level queer cultural centre in Hyde Street. It follows the appointment of new Raj House general manager Joel Allan, who has also established a marriage equality support group that will meet for the first time on Sunday.

Lucky Seven Swing / Alex Lloyd – Governor Hindmarsh

Kicking off at 1pm on Sunday will be an afternoon of swing dancing and live music featuring Adelaide acts Lucky Seven, Swing Out Adelaide and Atlantic Street Band, plus DJs Orange Blossom and Reynolds. Next Thursday at The Gov you can catch ARIA-winning singer-songwriter Alex Lloyd’s Up Close and Acoustic show.

South Australian Living Artists (SALA) festival

The 2017 SALA Festival features 660 free exhibitions across Adelaide and regional SA, with the work of SALA featured artist Christopher Orchard on show at BMGArt and the Art Gallery of SA. Special events this weekend include Luke Thurgate’s Sketchy SALA tour, which leaves from the Propaganda Club at 7pm tonight (bookings essential) and the SALA Gala Dada Dance at the Old Regent.  You’ll find the full SALA program here.

Beep – Space Theatre

Fresh from touring its award-winning show Grug overseas, Windmill Theatre Company is premiering its new children’s show this weekend at the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Space Theatre. Beep, suitable for ages one to seven, is a playful and interactive production said to celebrate friendship through “puppetry, whimsical staging and lots of laughs”. Performances continue until September 3.

Adelaide Chamber Singers – Pilgrim Church

Magnificent O is the title of the Chamber Singers’ second program of the year, and it will feature Seven Advent Antiphons by Bob Chilcott and Seven Magnificat Antiphons by Arvo Pärt. They will be complemented by three new works by composer Anne Cawrse in a set entitled On earth as it is in heaven, with texts by Michael Leunig and Sara Teasdale. Sunday’s concert at Ukaria Cultural Centre has sold out, but tickets are still available to the performance on Saturday at the Pilgrim Church in Adelaide. Details here.

Top Dog Film Festival – Capri Theatre

Cinema is going to the dogs – literally. The two-hour Top Dog Film Festival program comprises eight short canine-themed films from around the world. They include films that explore the bond between owners and their pets, one that gives an insight into the world of dog-powered sports, and another that follows a man and his dog on a 600km hike through the Utah Desert. The festival is at the Capri Theatre in Goodwood from 8.30-10.30pm on Wednesday, August 30. View the trailer here.

Vitalstatistix’s Adhocracy – Waterside

Artists from around Australia will converge on Vitalstatistix’s heritage-listed space at Port Adelaide next weekend for its annual hothouse, a program supporting the creative development of new experimental and multi-disciplinary arts projects. There will be artist talks and work-in-progress showings including dance, theatre, video and installation. The program runs from September 1-3 and can be downloaded here.

First Fridays – Art Gallery of SA

The Australian Art Revival is the theme of the Art Gallery of South Australia’s monthly after-hours event next Friday (September 1). It will launch the reopening of Gallery 6, with assistant director Lisa Slade discussing the big moments that shaped Australian art in the second half of the 20th century. There will be live music by the Zephyr Quartet and South Australian songstress Zkye. Details here.

Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the  Year 
– SA Museum

A stunning selection of images capturing the beauty of the natural world is on display at the South Australian Museum until September 24 in the Australian Geographic Nature Photographer of the Year exhibition. Justin Gilligan from New South Wales won the 2017 competition with an underwater photo capturing the moment a Maori octopus selected its prey from a crowd of spider crabs. The Summation of Force & a e i o u – Samstag Museum

SA photographers Trent Parke and Narelle Autio’s multi-channel video project The Summation of Force explores the world of cricket and was filmed almost entirely in the couple’s backyard with their two young sons. Also currently showing is Michelle Nikou: a e i o u, a survey of the work of the SA contemporary artist and Samstag Scholar. Both exhibitions run until September 1. Ramsay Art Prize – Art Gallery of SA

The work of the 21 national finalists in the inaugural Ramsay Art Prize is on show until August 27. The $100,000 prize, which is supported by philanthropist organisation the James & Diana Ramsay Foundation, is open to Australian artists under 40 working in any material or process, with finalists’ work including paintings, installations, ceramics, video and mixed media. It was won by Sydney-based artist Sarah Contos with a “colossal 20th-century quilt” (read more here).
