The free Paolo Sebastian: X exhibition celebrates the label’s 10th anniversary and will be presented jointly with the Adelaide Fashion Festival.

From October 7 until December 9, a selection of glamorous gowns from the couture collections will be interspersed throughout the Melrose Wing of the gallery, alongside historic European paintings and sculptures.

“I see couture as an art form as it takes an enormous amount of time, skill and technique to create couture, as does any piece of art,” says Vasileff.

“I’m so grateful for these past 10 years and they have been so memorable and fun. Although challenging at times, it’s all been an integral part of the journey and I wouldn’t change a thing.”

Vasileff, who learned to sew with his grandmother, has built an international reputation for his designs. He was the first South Australian to show a collection at the Paris Couture Fashion Week and was named the 2017 Australian of the Year in January.

His collections are said to be often inspired by “fable or fairytale”, with the gowns exuding a romantic, opulent, ultra-feminine glamour.

Gallery director Nick Mitzevich says AGSA is putting a renewed focus on fashion in its collection, with the announcement of a new Fashion Fund dedicated to acquiring “the most exciting and innovative examples of international and Australian fashion”.
