South Australian Living Artists (SALA) festival

The 2017 SALA Festival officially opens today, with 660 free exhibitions across Adelaide and regional SA encompassing all forms of visual art including painting, sculpture, jewellery and multi-media. Highlights include Sera Waters’ Domestic Arts, showcasing her signature embroideries and hand-crafted sculptures, at ACE Open; exhibitions of the work of SALA featured artist Christopher Orchard at BMGArt and the Art Gallery of SA; and The Great Suffragist Dirigible, a series of portraits honouring important women from SA’s history, at the Town Hall. There will be pop-up exhibitions and activities at the SALA Parlour, a converted shipping container on the grounds of the SA Museum, plus events such as art tours, a SALA Gala Dada Dance at The Old Regent, and AfterDark SALA in the Port. ASO’s Puppets & Pranksters – Town Hall

The second concert in the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s Great Classics series promises “a night of musical tricks, games and high spirits”. Conducted by Nicholas Carter and featuring guest violinist Alina Ibragimova, the program features Prokofiev’s First Violin Concerto, the Strauss showpiece Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks, Stravinsky’s Pulcinella: Suite and Haydn’s Symphony No 94 Surprise. Puppets & Pranksters is at the Town Hall on Saturday evening.

Umbrella: Winter City Sounds

It’s the closing weekend of the Umbrella: Winter City Sounds music festival. Gigs include tonight’s “Scouted” mini music fest, featuring 15 South Australian unsigned artists at the Crown & Anchor hotel and Producers Bar; the Big Beanie Bash Hutt St Centre fundraising show at The Grace Emily on Sunday, and the Sanctuary Festival, featuring music (The Dashumi Ensemble, James Byrne, Abbey Howlett) and yoga in the Robinson Heritage Warehouse on Halifax Street, also on Sunday.

Guitars in Bars

The Adelaide Festival Centre’s Guitars in Bars is a series of free and ticketed gigs in pubs, clubs, bars, restaurants and exhibition spaces in the city, suburbs and hills. It ends on Sunday, with the full list of events here.

Split Second Heroes – Space Theatre

Featuring Gabrielle Nankivell, Luke Smiles and Vincent Crowley, this new dance work promises “an endearingly eccentric, superbly physical, high-tech take on the age-old quest for self-discovery”. Along with skilled dance moves, audiences can expect dry humour, 1980s nostalgia and even some space trivia. Commissioned by the Adelaide Festival Centre, Split Second Heroes is having its world premiere at the centre’s Space Theare, with the final performance on Saturday evening.

Emil and the Detectives – Myer Centre

Slingsby theatre company’s latest show is an adaptation by SA playwright Nicki Bloom of German author Erich Kästner’s 1929 novella Emil and the Detectives. Described by Slingsby artistic director Andy Packer as “a really beautiful story about growing up”, it follows a child who is robbed during a train trip and ends up banding together with a group of young “detectives” to bring the thief to justice. The play is being presented at the old Dazzeland site, on level five of the Myer Centre, until August 5. Read InDaily‘s review here

Scandinavian Film Festival – Palace Nova Eastend

It’s the final weekend of the Scandinavian Film Festival at Palace Nova Eastend, with screenings including The Other Side of Hope, the latest quirky offering by Finnish director and auteur Aki Kaurismäki (read review here), Swedish comedy-drama A Hustler’s Diary, and Norwegian historical drama The King’s Choice (shortlisted for the Best Foreign Language Academy Award). Movie Masterpieces II: The Sequel – AEC

Presented by film critic Margaret Pomeranz (pictured above) and conducted by Guy Noble, this Adelaide Symphony Orchestra concert will include music from an eclectic collection of films including Star Wars, Babe, Doctor Zhivago, Gladiator and To Kill a Mockingbird. There will be two Movie Masterpieces II performances at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre next weekend, on August 4 and 5.

Kokoda – Star Theatres

This new World War II drama by Adelaide writer Peter Maddern tells the story of a street-wise larrikin, Private Morris Powell (played by Todd Gray), and his mates who “helped do the impossible – stop the Japanese advancing in New Guinea and then send them packing”. Kokoda is at at Star Theatres, Sir Donald Brandman Drive, until August 5. Details here.

Marathon – Bakehouse Theatre

The one-act drama-comedy sees two friends go on a training run where they run into their past and their future in “a beautifully simple exploration of what it means to be alive”. Marathon is being presented at the Bakehouse by Adapt Enterprises until August 6.

Ramsay Art Prize – Art Gallery of SA

The work of the 21 national finalists in the inaugural Ramsay Art Prize is on show until August 27. The $100,000 prize, which is supported by philanthropist organisation the James & Diana Ramsay Foundation, is open to Australian artists under 40 working in any material or process, with finalists’ work including paintings, installations, ceramics, video and mixed media. It was won by Sydney-based artist Sarah Contos with a “colossal 20th-century quilt” (read more here).

The Summation of Force & a e i o u – Samstag Museum

SA photographers Trent Parke and Narelle Autio’s multi-channel video project The Summation of Force explores the world of cricket and was filmed almost entirely in the couple’s backyard with their two young sons. Also currently showing at the Samstag Museum is Michelle Nikou: a e i o u, a survey of the work of the SA contemporary artist and Samstag Scholar. Both exhibitions run until September 1.
