Jake Shimabukuro / Rickie Lee Jones – The Gov

Powerhouse ukulele musician Jake Shimabukuro – whose repertoire ranges from original compositions to songs such as Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah’” – is playing a gig at the Governor Hindmarsh on Sunday night. On Saturday night, The Gov will host two-time Grammy-winning American singer-songwriter Rickie Lee Jones. Doors open for both shows at 7.30pm.

First Fridays: Art Versus Rodin – Art Gallery of SA

The gallery’s after-hours (5-9pm) First Fridays event tonight will include guided tours of the exhibition Versus Rodin: Bodies Across Space and Time, plus the experimental sounds of composer Adam Page. Artist Chris Scherer will also present Duncan, a work-in-development with Vitalstatistix and the Performance & Art Development Agency, which is inspired by dance pioneer Isadora Duncan and draws on her influence on the visual art world.

Cyndi Lauper & Blondie – McLaren Vale

The final Day on the Green show of the 2016/17 season will see pop icons Cyndi Lauper and Blondie take to the stage at Leaconfield Wines in McLaren Vale on Sunday. Tickets are still available for the show, which begins at 3.30pm with performances by support acts Alex Lahey, Montaigne and the Clouds. It’s a fully licensed event but you can BYO picnic. Long Tan – Space Theatre

This audio-theatre work from Adelaide’s Brink Productions immerses audience members in the chaos and horror experienced by Australian soldiers at the Battle of Long Tan in the Vietnam War. The show features 12 actors and a script created from interviews with surviving soldiers, with sound effects conveyed through headphones. Read InDaily‘s review here. The ends on Saturday. An exhibition, Ripples of Wartime, is running concurrently in the theatre foyer.

Adelaide Youth Orchestra: Organ Symphony – Elder Hall

The young musicians of the Adelaide Youth Orchestra will present their first major concert of the year at 3pm on Sunday at Elder Hall, with a program including Saint-Saëns’ Organ Symphony (which featured in the soundtrack to the film Babe). The concert will also feature flautist Madeleine Stewart performing Nielsen’s Flute Concerto and pianist Ruiting Ting Yun playing Liszt’s Piano Concerto No. 1. Details here.

Santana with The Doobie Brothers – Botanic Park

Guitar virtuoso Carlos Santana and his band will bring their Australian tour to Adelaide’s Botanic Park on Sunday with a performance featuring music from all four decades of their career. Santana will be joined by ’70s hit-makers The Doobie Brothers (“Listen to the Music”, “Long Train Running”) and ARIA Hall of Famer Russell Morris (“The Real Thing”). The show begins at 3.30pm.

French Film Festival – Palace Nova Eastend

From comedies, dramas and documentaries, to special themed events and première screenings, the 2017 Alliance Française French Film Festival is a showcase of contemporary French cinema. Running until April 23 at Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas, it comprises 45 films featuring stars such as Juliette Binoche, Vincent Cassel, Marion Cotillard, Catherine Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu. Openair Cinema – Glenelg Foreshore

Described as the most expensive blockbuster filmed entirely in China, The Great Wall is screening at Ben & Jerry’s Openair Cinema tonight (Friday), with new romantic sci-fi film The Space Between Us showing on Saturday. The MA15+ Logan – reportedly Hugh Jackman’s last appearance as Wolverine – will close out the cinema’s 2017 season on Sunday night. Gates open at 6pm and films begin at sunset; BYO picnic blanket or bean lounger.

Frank Forbes and the Yahoo Boy – Bakehouse Theatre

A staged reading of this new play by Adelaide writer and filmmaker Matt Hawkins will be presented at the Bakehouse Theatre this Saturday and Sunday. Based on a true story, Frank Forbes and the Yahoo Boy centres on a retired Adelaide engineer and his impulsive decision to invest in a movie by a would-be Nollywood filmmaker he encounters via email.

Unsettled: Colonial Ruin in the Flinders Ranges – State Library

This exhibition shares stories from the Flinders Ranges through a mixture of media art, photography, archival imagery and documentary interviews. Unsettled seeks to move beyond what it describes as “the nostalgia typical of settler-colonial representations”, and includes striking portraits of Adnyamathanha people taken at the Nepabunna Mission by Charles Mountford in the 1930s. RED: Del Kathryn Barton – Art Gallery of SA

Featuring actress Cate Blanchett, this surrealist short film by Del Kathryn Barton is described as a savage tale of female power inspired by the brutal mating ritual of the redback spider. Celtic Illusion – Her Majesty’s Theatre

Fusing modern Irish dance with magic and illusion, this show features a cast that includes members of Riverdance and Lord of the Dance, promising “some of the fastest taps in the world”. See a taste of what to expect here. Celtic Illusion at Her Majesty’s Theatre for one night on Monday, April 10.
