The Waifs – The Gov

After wowing the WOMADelaide crowd in Botanic Park earlier this month, Australian folk trio The Waifs are back for a gig at the Governor Hindmarsh on Sunday night. An Evening With the Waifs: The 25th Anniversary Tour will include tracks from new album, Ironbark, alongside hits from throughout their career. They will be supported at The Gov by Adelaide’s The Yearlings.

French Film Festival – Palace Nova Eastend

From comedies, dramas and documentaries, to special themed events and première screenings, the 2017 Alliance Française French Film Festival is a showcase of contemporary French cinema. Running until April 23 at Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas, it comprises 45 films featuring stars such as Juliette Binoche, Vincent Cassel, Marion Cotillard, Catherine Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu. Long Tan – Space Theatre

Long-Tan---Brink-ProductionsThis audio-theatre work from Adelaide’s Brink Productions immerses audience members in the chaos and horror experienced by Australian soldiers at the Battle of Long Tan during the Vietnam War. The show features 12 actors and a script created from interviews with surviving soldiers, with sound effects conveyed through headphones. Preview performances of Long Tan begin at the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Space Theatre this weekend, with the season running until April 8. An exhibition, Ripples of Wartime, is running concurrently in the theatre foyer.

ASO’s Silver & Gold – Adelaide Town Hall

The first of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s Master Series concerts for 2017 promises “a Viennese hot chocolate in musical form”. It will feature guest conductor Mark Wigglesworth and violinist Akiko Suwanai, with a program comprising Strauss’s Emperor Waltz, Korngold’s Violin Concerto and Brahms’ Symphony No 2. Performances are at the Town Hall tonight (Friday) and tomorrow night.

Classics Unwrapped 1 – Town Hall

Conductor and presenter Guy Noble will be joined by guest Michael Keelan and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra as he unwraps “bite-sized bits” of classical music, including from the score of TV’s Game of Thrones, the opera Hansel and Gretel and the William Tell Overture. Classics Unwrapped 1 is at the Town Hall at 6.30pm, Wednesday, April 5.

Flickerfest – Mercury Cinema

My-Best-Friend-is-Stuck-on-the-Ceiling_Flickerfest2017_BestofAUSSeventeen short films from the Flickerfest 2017 program will be showcased at Adelaide’s Mercury Cinema on Saturday night (April 1). First up at 6pm will be the Best of International Shorts, including films from Switzerland, Germany, Canada and France. The Best of Australian Shorts, at 8.30pm, will include Adelaide director Matt Vesely’s My Best Friend is Stuck on the Ceiling (above) and outback film MESSiAH, starring David Gulpilil and written and directed by Underbelly star Damian Walshe-Howling.

Oz Comic-Con – Adelaide Showgrounds

Dubbed by organisers as the “ultimate celebration of geeky goodness”, pop-culture event Oz Comic-Con will take over the Adelaide Showgrounds this weekend, with exhibitions, workshops, dedicated anime and gaming areas, and celebrity guests including Melissa Joan Hart (Sabrina the Teenage Witch), Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones) and Arthur Darvill (Doctor Who). It will also host the 2017 SA finals of the Australian Cosplay championships. Oz Comic-Con runs from 9am-6pm, Saturday and Sunday.

Cirque Africa

Cirque-AfricaAdelaide Fringe act Cirque Africa is staying in SA beyond Mad March to present more shows, with performances under the big top at Ridley Reserve in Elizabeth (until April 2), Warland Reserve at Victor Harbor (April 18-30) and Wigley Reserve at Glenelg (May 3-14). Versus Rodin: Bodies Through Time and Space – Art Gallery of SA

This exhibition brings together key pieces by Auguste Rodin, the pioneer of modern sculpture, with more than 200 works referencing the human body by other modern and contemporary artists. Read more about the works and the artists here. Versus Rodin is at the gallery until July 2, with guided tours daily at 11am and 2pm. The gallery is hosting a NEO Teen Takeover free event for teenagers from 5.30pm to 8.30pm tonight (Friday), featuring film, music, dancing, theatre and circus performances. The Play that Goes Wrong – Her Majesty’s Theatre

This touring comedy sees mayhem unleashed when an accident-prone amateur drama society tries to stage a 1920s murder mystery. A hit in the West End, it’s being presented here with a mostly Australian cast and will appeal to fans of farce and slick physical comedy, according to InDaily‘s reviewer. The Play That Goes Wrong is at Her Majesty’s Theatre until April 2.

The Sound of Australia with William Barton – Adelaide Town Hall

William-BartonYidaki (didjeridu) virtuoso William Barton will join with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra to present The Sound of Australia, a one-off concert next Thursday (April 6) conducted by Luke Dollman that will bring the sounds of the SA Museum’s Yidaki exhibition to life. The concert will feature music that evokes the Australian landscape, as well as digital projections. The exhibition Yidaki: Didjeridu and the Sound of Australia is at the museum until July 16.

Openair Cinema – Glenelg Foreshore

You can sing along karaoke-style at a Sundae Session screening of Grease at Ben & Jerry’s Openair Cinema this weekend. Other upcoming films include Jasper Jones (tonight), Moana (Saturday), Hidden Figures (Tuesday – captioned screening) and La La Land (Wednesday). Gates open at 6pm and films begin at sunset; BYO picnic blanket or bean lounger.

Countercurrents & The Ocean After Nature – Samstag Museum

These concurrent exhibitions at the Samstag Museum of Art comprise work with an oceanic theme. Countercurrents, showing until April 3, features painting, video, sculpture, installation and photography works by eight artists exploring the complex history linked to the waters of the Pacific Ocean. The Ocean After Nature (until June 9) considers “the ocean as a site reflecting the ecological, cultural, political and economic realities of a globalised world” through the work of 16 international artists and collectives.

STEEL: art design architecture – Jam Factory

Curated by the JamFactory’s Margaret Hancock Davis, this touring exhibition shows the innovative ways in which 29 artists, designers and architects in Australia are using steel in the 21st century. The range of approaches is broad, from hand-crafted jewellery to steel used in high-tech research facilities. STEEL: art design architecture is at the JamFactory in Adelaide until April 23 and will then move to the Seppeltsfield JamFactory in the Barossa from May 13 – July 16.

RED: Del Kathryn Barton – Art Gallery of SA

Featuring actress Cate Blanchett, this surrealist short film by Del Kathryn Barton is described as a savage tale of female power inspired by the brutal mating ritual of the redback spider.
