What’s on: Art in the garden, iconic Beatles, murder and mayhem

SALA is popping up in the garden this weekend, with other events including the noir thriller The 39 Steps, Beatles Back2Back, The Sound of Music, and the opening of two new art exhibitions.

SALA in the Garden – Unley Road Soldiers Memorial Gardens

One of the biggest events during the South Australia Living Artists Festival, SALA in the Garden is a free family day featuring pop-up galleries, demonstrations by local artists, children’s painting workshops, live music, and food and wine. It is at the Unley Road Soldiers Memorial Gardens from 10.30am until 4.30pm on Sunday. The month-long SALA Festival features work from more than 4600 artists in 630 free exhibitions state-wide. Cine Latino Film Festival – Palace Nova Eastend

More than 30 films from Latin American countries including Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Cuba, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Uruguay and Venezuela are screening during the Cine Latino Film Festival at Palace Nova Eastend until August 24. See full program details here.

Described as a “wonderfully deranged comedy”, the stage adaptation of The 39 Steps replicates Alfred Hitchcock’s entire 1935 film, with just four actors playing 139 roles. Pulled into a web of intrigue and pursued by a shady organisation, the debonair Richard Hannay must solve the mystery of The 39 Steps to save his skin. The noir thriller is being presented by the State Theatre Company of SA at the Dunstan Playhouse until September 11. Read InDaily’s interview with cast member Charles Mayer here.

The Sound of Music – Festival Theatre

The touring London Palladium production of this popular Rodgers and Hammerstein musical is playing at the Festival Theatre in Adelaide until September 4. Recounting the well-known story of the von Trapp family’s flight across the mountains to escape the Nazis, The Sound of Music features a cast including Cameron Daddo (Captain von Trapp), Marina Prior, Lorraine Bayly and Adelaide-born Johanna Allen. Experimenta Recharge – Samstag Museum

Opening today at the Samstag Museum of Art, Experimenta Recharge, the 6th International Biennial of Media Art, features the work of 20 Australian and international artists who employ, critique and experiment with media and technology. The exhibition draws on disciplines and influences such as photography, biology, sculpture and installation, electromagnetics, sound art, robotics, gaming, dance, the internet, performance, 3D printing, animation, film, video and analogue television. It continues until September 23.

Beatles Back2Back – Entertainment Centre

Russell-MorrisThis touring show sees the iconic Beatles albums Abbey Road and Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band performed back to back and track by track live on stage. Beatles Back2Back features ARIA Hall of Fame inductee Russell Morris (pictured above), Kav Temperley (Eskimo Joe), Jack Jones (Southern Sons) and English singer-songwriter Jon Allen, backed by 15-piece band complete with horns and strings, plus an array of Indian instruments. There’s one show in Adelaide at the Entertainment Centre Theatre on Sunday.

The Badloves & Taxiride – The Gov

Enduring Australian band The Badloves – whose debut album Get on Board spent 69 weeks in the charts in 1994 – and Melbourne rockers Taxiride are performing at the Governor Hindmarsh on Saturday as part of a national tour. Drumscene Live will be bringing their 10th anniversary tour to the hotel on Sunday.

Emily Loves to Bounce – Patch Theatre

Inspired by three books by Australian author Stephen Michael King, Patch Theatre’s Emily Loves to Bounce features live music, storytelling and “theatre mystery”. Final performances are at Norwood’s Odeon Theatre on Saturday.

Robert Hannaford exhibition – Art Gallery of SA

Fifty years of work by South Australian portrait artist Robert Hannaford is on show in this exhibition at the Art Gallery of South Australia until October 9. It features 180 of his drawings, 40 paintings and two bronze sculptures, alongside works by his South Australian mentors and some of the European masters he admired. Stunning photographs capturing the natural beauty of the Australia, New Zealand, Antarctica and New Guinea bioregion – including flora, fauna and landscapes – are on display in this exhibition at the SA Museum until October 3. Biography: A Game – Bakehouse Theatre

A play about choice and consequences, Biography: A Game sees a middle-aged behavioural researcher given the opportunity to start his life over at any point he chooses.  It’s playing at Bakehouse Theatre until August 20.

Fiona Hall – All the King’s Men – Art Gallery of SA

All the King’s Men is the masterwork from Fiona Hall’s 2015 Venice Biennale exhibition Wrong Way Time. The installation includes 20 sculptures suspended in space that are made from military uniforms, with mask-like heads and ghostly, skeletal bodies. The installation will be at the Art Gallery of SA until December 21. The Crucible – Little Theatre

The University of Adelaide Theatre Guild has taken on Arthur Miller’s powerful drama set against the backdrop of the 17th-century Salem witch trials for its latest production. The Crucible is playing at the Little Theatre, The Cloisters, Adelaide University until August 20.
