It’s all happening in Adelaide this long weekend, including the Semaphore Music Festival, the opening of the stage show Dirty Dancing, and a host of Asian-themed art, entertainment and food with the OzAsia Festival, INDOofest, AsiaFest and the Night Noodle Markets.

Other picks include the First Fridays after-hours event at the Art Gallery of SA, Monday’s West End Slowdown, shows by the young performers at Cirkidz, a gig at The Gov by Dead Letter Circus, and two intimate shows at La Boheme by singer Rob Mills.

Semaphore Music Festival

Running across four days of this long weekend, this festival will feature a packed line-up of acoustic, blues, country, folk, jazz and rockabilly music across two stages on the Semaphore Foreshore. It’s a fully licensed and catered event, with the program of more than 40 acts including The Timbers, Max Savage and his False Idols, The Yearlings, The Baker Suite, Banjo Jackson, Koral and The Goodbye Horses, The Satellites and more. OzAsia Festival

Taiwan’s M.O.V.E Theatre’s Dear John – a theatrical show at Nexus Arts inspired by the work of avant-garde composer John Cage and comprising original music, installation and physical theatre – will be one of the highlights of the OzAsia Festival‘s final weekend. Other events include Korean goth-electro-disco-punk outfit Gogostar (pictured above); an Australian Art Orchestra concert fusing Sichuan melodies with modern jazz improv, and dance production Play. Night Noodle Markets

The Adelaide Festival Centre precinct has been transformed into an Asian hawker-style market for the 2015 OzAsia Festival. It is open over the weekend from noon till late, with stalls serving street-food-style meals alongside bars and live music. INDOfest

This free family festival comprises events taking place around the North Terrace cultural precinct on Monday. There will be demonstrations of music, dance and cultural activities from different regions of Indonesia, children’s workshops, a fashion show, and food and cooking demonstrations. Details here.

First Fridays – Art Gallery of SA

River is the theme of tonight’s First Friday event, with guided tours of the Ngarrindjeri weaver Yvonne Koolmatrie exhibition Riverland,  a performance by Jamie Goldsmith playing the traditional Aboriginal instrument the Yidaki, and country music by Juliet Oliver, and Robert K Champion and his band. The after-hours event continues until 9pm. On Sunday from 11am-3pm, there will be free storytelling sessions, children’s tours of Riverland and weaving workshops as part of the gallery’s START series of events for young children.

Dirty Dancing – Festival Theatre

The classic ’80s film about a teenager seduced by both dance and the dance instructor while at a holiday resort with her family is brought to life in this touring stage production. It features catchy hits such as “Hungry Eyes”, “The Time of My Life” and “Dirty Dancing” alongside high-energy dance routines. AsiaFest

Food and cultural festival AsiaFest returns to Rymill Park for 10 days from today (Friday), showcasing more than 20 of Adelaide’s restaurateurs in pop-up food stalls reflecting an Asian street market ambiance and the culinary delights of countries such as China, Thailand, Vietnam, Korea and Japan. There will also be live entertainment, including comedy, music and dance, throughout the festival.

West End Slowdown

Former players including Tony Modra, Tyson Edwards and Matthew Primus will join SA identities and media personalities for the West End Slowdown at Adelaide Oval on Monday. Gates open at 11am and there will be family entertainment, plus the chance to have a “kick n catch” on the Oval at halftime. It’s all for a good cause, with proceeds going to the Little Heroes Foundation.

AMC Sessions – Goodwood Institute

London bombing survivor Gill Hicks will be performing an original song by songwriter Gary Burrows at tonight’s Adelaide Music Collective event at the Goodwood Institute. Also on the line-up are The Moonshine Jug and String Band, and young Triple J Unearthed singer-songwriters Sasha March and Banjo Jackson.

Thailand Ladyboys Superstars Cabaret

More than 20 Thai Ladyboy cabaret performers star in this sequin and feather-filled show which blends cabaret, dance and comedy with lip-syncs performed to classic and contemporary songs. Shows continue under the Big Top in Bonython Park until October 17.

We, The Unseen – Cirkidz

Young performers from Cirkidz are inviting audiences into their world with a series of shows at the South Australian Circus Centre (Fifth Street, Bowden). Performances run from October 4-10 and will include acrobatics, tumbling, hand balancing, unicycle and aerial trapeze routines. (Photo: Ian Routledge)

Dead Letter Circus – The Gov

Queensland alt-rock five-piece Dead Letter Circus will be showcasing tracks from their latest release Aesthesis, as well as fan faves from their previous albums, at Sunday’s gig at The Governor Hindmarsh. Doors open at 7.30pm. New York hip-hop artist Cormega will be playing a gig at The Gov on Sunday night.

Barossa Baroque and Beyond

Described as a micro-fest of fine music, Baroque and Beyond will feature two concerts in Tanunda on Sunday by current and former members of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Australian String Quartet and Opera Australia. Concert one, in the Organ Hall of Tanunda Regional Gallery, has sold out, but tickets are still available to the second concert at 6pm at Old Redemption, Peter Lehmann Wines. Details here.

Italian Film Festival

Comedy, drama, romance, crime, fantasy and documentary films are being screened throughout the Italian Film Festival season at Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas until October 7. View session times online.

The Return – Theatre Guild

This psychological thriller by Australian playwright Reg Cribb (Last Cab to Darwin) follows the escapades of a career thug and his mate who set out to get the attention of a beautiful law student during a train journey. It is being presented by the University of Adelaide Theatre Guild at the Little Theatre, The Cloisters, Adelaide Uni, until October 17.

Rob Mills – La Boheme

Singer Rob Mills (pictured right) will be in cabaret mode for two intimate solo shows at La Boheme this Sunday and Monday. He will cover artists ranging from Taylor Swift to John Farnham, as well performing hits from several of the musicals he has appeared in, including The Last Five Years, Legally Blonde and Wicked.

Ensemble Le Mode – Elder Hall

Comprising members of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, Ensemble Le Mode will present works by Beethoven and Mozart for piano and wind instruments at a concert at 3pm on Sunday at Elder Hall. They will be joined by guest pianist Kristian Chong.

Zigzag Street – Stirling Players

This theatre adaptation of Nick Earl’s novel Zigzag Street follows six weeks in the life of 28-year-old Richard, who is wallowing in misery in his late grandparents’ house in Zigzag Street after his girlfriend left him. Stirling Players’ production of the comedy is being directed by Miriam Keane and is playing at the Stirling Community Theatre until October 10.

The Audition – Bakehouse Theatre

How far will an actor go to get a part? That’s the question posed in this new play directed by Joh Hartog and being presented at the Bakehouse Theatre until October 3. The Audition centres on a no-holds-barred struggle – or “bootcamp audition” – between director Stella and budding actor Lauren during an all-day process that stretches Lauren’s mental, physical, emotional and ethical limits.
