Adelaide Biennial is child’s play

Apr 03, 2014

As mad March comes to an end for another year, there is still a lot to do for children and families at the Art Gallery of South Australia.  With the 2014 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art continuing daily until 11 May there are a host of activities, tours and hands-on workshops that take inspiration from the cutting-edge contemporary art on display.

START at the Gallery
The theatre of silhouettes comes to life this START day as we cut a path through the work of Dark Heart artist Sally Smart. Join our START Team for a special look at Sally Smart’s work then play with shadows, shapes, fabric and paper as you contribute to a collaborative wall installation. Kids can also make a shadow puppet and bring it to life in a special performance.

START at the Gallery: Get Smart runs from 11am to 3pm on Sunday 6 April and is presented free thanks to The Balnaves Foundation.

The Studio
Have you ever crossed your fingers for good luck? Adelaide-based sculptor and installation artist Julia Robinson presents The Studio, an immersive and interactive art space full of superstitions for all ages. Create an imaginative good-luck talisman you can wear, hang in your home or keep in your pocket. Open daily, 10am to 5pm and presented free thanks to the James and Diana Ramsay Foundation.

School Holiday Workshops
Adelaide Biennial artists Ah Xian and Brendan Huntly are the inspiration for the April school holiday workshops. Make a sculptural bust inspired by their works using air dry clay, paint and found objects. The workshops run from Tuesday 22 to Thursday 24 April, are $5 per child and always sell out, so book early on 8207 7005. The 10am and 11.30am sessions are suitable for 5-8 year olds and 1pm session is suitable for 9-12 year olds.

The 2014 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art: Dark Heart runs until May 11 at the Art Gallery of South Australia. Find out more about the dedicated children and families program online at www.adelaidebiennial.com.au
