From the concert hall to the laneway, there’s a smorgasbord of live music, foodie and cultural events in the city and beyond this weekend, including the Carnevale Italian Festival, Fork at the Movies and the Flower Party.

St Jerome’s Laneway Festival

After a few space issues in its City West location last year, this popular music festival will debut today in the new site at Harts Mill in Port Adelaide – and last we looked there were still tickets available. The 2014 Adelaide Laneway line-up includes Kiwi singer-of-the-moment Lorde, Aussie bands Cloud Control and The Jezabels, the UK’s Chvrches, and US outfits Warpaint and Parquet Courts. Local talent will also get an airing on the Vitals Stage (presented by Format).

Lior & Westlake: Songs with Orchestra

This concert at the Festival Theatre tonight brings together the talents of singer-songwriter Lior, acclaimed conductor Nigel Westlake and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. The first half of the performance will see Lior singing a selection of his popular songs alongside the ASO, while the second half is dedicated to Compassion, his song cycle with Westlake which is based on ancient Hebrew and Arabic writings. Flower Party

Adelaide band Jimmy & the Mirrors is hosting its Flower Party at the Queen’s Theatre on Saturday (February 8), with other acts on the bill including Max Savage and the False Idols, Timberwolf, It’s a Hoax and Irish act FitzaFrenic. It’s the fifth year the Flower Party has been held, and in addition to the bigger venue (last year it was in Arcade Lane), they’re also promising “more flowers and even more beautiful people”.

Carnevale Italian Festival

This annual Italian celebration will take over the Adelaide Showground this Saturday and Sunday, with events ranging from pasta-eating competitions and coffee master-classes, to fashion parades and a cavalcade of sexy cars. There will be lashings of food (think arancini, calzone, zeppole and other treats), and live performances by acts such as Joey Fimmano, Grace Bawden, Lucky Seven, Shaken Not Stirred, and the Adelaide Youth Strings. Oliver!

This weekend is your last chance to see the Gilbert & Sullivan Society of SA’s Oliver!, with the final performance on Saturday at the Arts Theatre in Angas Street.  Based, of course, on Charles Dickens’ Oliver Twist, the musical is said mercilessly “expose and attack the dark social underbelly of 1850s London”. The Diana Krall Quartet

Grammy-winning jazz singer and pianist Diana Krall is bringing her three-piece band to Adelaide for one show only as part of a national tour. Fans at the Festival Theatre show on Saturday night can expect to hear songs from Krall’s most recent release Glad Rag Doll, as well as from earlier albums such as bestseller The Look of Love.

Moonlight Cinema

It’s “doggie night” at the Botanic Park Moonlight Cinema tonight (Friday), which means patrons can bring their four-legged friends along to the screening of the Ben Stiller comedy The Secret Life of Walter Mitty. But be warned: your pooch must be on a short leash and aggressive behaviour will not be tolerated (by dog or owner, we assume). Also showing this weekend are the animated flick Frozen (Saturday) and romantic drama About Time (Sunday). Gates open at 7pm and screenings start at sundown.

Fork at the Movies

Mobile food vendors will converge on Whitmore Square from 4pm-10pm on Saturday (February 8) for a special movie-themed Fork on the Road supported by Adelaide’s Doc Week.  As well as food, wine, beer, cider, music and kids’ activities, there will be a free screening at 8.30pm of the Australian wine doco Red Obsession, which is narrated by Russell Crowe and co-directed by David Roach.

Street Level

Adelaide music hub soundpond.net is hosting a free street party from 1pm-1am on Sunday (February 9) off Coromandel Place in the city. Supported by the likes of Tooth and Nail art studio, Transition Records and Adelaide Bike Kitchen, Street Level organisers are promising a “chilled afternoon” of live music and DJs, alongside art, pre-loved fashion market stalls, food vendors and more.

Macbeth

Adelaide emerging professional theatre company Foul Play has taken an usual approach to the Shakespearean tale of Macbeth, presenting the play with two casts – one male, one female – in a warehouse space at Plant 1 in Bowden. The setting adds to the atmosphere and intrigue, according InDaily’s reviewer, who highly recommends the innovative production. Performances continue until Sunday (February 9) at Plant 1, corner Park Terrace and Fifth Street.

Love Langhorne Creek

The Love Langhorne Creek event this weekend (February 8-9) will see the region’s cellar doors showing off “alternative” varieties. Varieties such as Malbec, Graciano, Montepulciano and Vermentino will be served with food from around the world – for example, there will be Argentinian empanadas at Bleasdale, Spanish-style prawns at Lake Breeze, and French chocolates at Rusticana.

Sunday Session

Still talking food, meatballs and craft beer will be the combo served at the Adelaide Food and Wine Festival’s “Sunday Session” this weekend (February 9). Get down to the Riverbank (adjacent to the Dunstan Playhouse) from 11am to partake in the “meatball melange”.
