Eskimo Joe will play at the Gorgeous Festival on Saturday night.

Get yer Gorgeous on and head to the Vales for some vibes among the vines … or check out the high notes at Opera SA’s Madama Butterfly. Other weekend events include the Semaphore Street Fair, Feast picnic, Bowerbird Bazaar design market, and whole lotta Dr Who.

Gorgeous Festival

A hot line-up of acts headlined by the John Butler Trio and Eskimo Joe are pumping up the volume in the vines at the two-day Gorgeous Festival this weekend. Based at Serafino Winery in McLaren Vale, the festival opens at 4pm today (Friday), with other names on the program including Lanie Lane, Thelma Plum, The Audreys, Blue King Brown, and SA songbirds Laura Hill and Courtney Robb. There’s also visual art, cooking demos, regional food and wine.

Madama Butterfly

The tragic tale of a young Japanese woman’s doomed marriage to an American navy lieutenant is being presented by Opera SA at the Festival Theatre from November 23-30. The company describes Madama Butterfly (played by Joanna McWaters) as one of Puccini’s most endearing and enduring heroines, saying the composer’s magic “produces music of heart-rending power and exquisite delicacy in this tale of love and honour pitted against callousness and cultural chauvinism”.

Feast Festival

Live music, a silent disco, dog show, sideshow alley, stalls, novelty races and even a handbag toss will be among the entertainment at the Feast Festival Picnic in the Park on Sunday. This year’s picnic will be held at Bonython Park from 11am-5pm, and will be followed by an after-party at the Lion Arts Centre courtyard. Other events on the final Feast weekend include singer Selina Jenkins’ Beau Heartbreaker (“one woman, performing as one very endearing bloke”) and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performance showcase Nungay Nite.

WP-BowerbirdBowerbird Bazaar

Adelaide’s twice-yearly design market is back in the Stirling Angas Pavilion at the Adelaide Showground this weekend – just in time for Christmas shopping. Bowerbird features more than 100 stalls selling artisan furniture, lighting, textiles, accessories, stationery, glass, ceramics, visual art, clothing and more. There’s also food to help you refuel. Open 4-9pm Friday and 10am-5pm Saturday and Sunday. (T-shirt, right, by Bowerbird stallholder Zefertiti.)

British Film Festival

One Chance, a comedy about the rags-to-riches story of Britain’s Got Talent winner Paul Potts, will open the British Film Festival tonight (Friday) at Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas. The festival will also include a special Saturday afternoon screening of David Lean’s 1945 classic Brief Encounter, complete with high tea, with other films showing over the weekend including the new political thriller Closed Circuit, starring Eric Bana. The festival runs until December 1, with the full Adelaide program available online.

Semaphore Street Fair

Tribal belly dancing, market stalls, fashion parades, highland dancing, street theatre, African drumming, DJs, kids’ events, pet parades – these are just some of the activities lined up for this Sunday’s Semaphore Street Fair. Semaphore Road will be closed for the free festival, which runs from 11am-5pm, with entertainment across four stages.

Vitalstatistix Cutaway – A Ceremony

A Ceremony – described as an intimate series of performance experiences, complete with supper – is the final instalment in the Vitalstatistix Cutaway trilogy, which has coincided with and celebrated the heritage restoration of the Waterside Workers Hall at Port Adelaide. Creative producer Emma Webb says A Ceremony heralds Waterside’s passage to the future. “These evenings will be intimate, inspiring, thought-provoking, convivial and unique each night. They are for both strangers and friends of Waterside, and everyone in between.”

Doctor-Who-Day-of-The-Doctor-PosterDr Who 50th anniversary

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of this iconic TV show, cinemas around the world are screening the anniversary episode in 3D, including behind-the-scenes content. SA cinemas participating in the November 24 Day of the Doctor event include Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas, Mitcham Wallis Cinemas, Mt Baker Wallis Cinemas, Noarlunga Wallis Cinemas and Piccadilly Wallis Cinemas. ABC1 will screen the episode on the same day, while The Gov at Hindmarsh is hosting a Dr Who 50th Anniversary Party. Full anniversary screening details can be found on the official Dr Who website.

AdYO concert

The Adelaide Youth Orchestras – incorporating the Youth Sinfonia, Youth Wind Orchestra and Youth Strings – will perform their final concert of the year at Elder Hall on Sunday afternoon. The concert will feature three new works by young SA composers, including 25-year-old David John Lang’s On Further Reflection: A Day in the Life of the Mall’s Balls, which is described as a 10-minute musical depiction of 24 hours in Rundle Mall.

Maggie Stone

Kris McQuade from TV show Wentworth plays tough and unsympathetic loans officer Maggie Stone in this State Theatre Company of SA play, which is based on a script by Adelaide playwright Caleb Lewis that explores issues related to refugees and racial prejudice. It’s a play that stimulates the senses and engages the intellect, says InDaily’s review. Maggie Stone is at the Space Theatre until November 30.

Love Rides the Rails

“Dazzlingly clever and hugely funny” is how InDaily’s review described this latest production from the Blackwood Players. Based on a story by Morland Cary and offering opportunities for audience participation, the comedy centres on the villainous Simon Darkway and his attempts to gain control of the Blackwood, Belair and Bridgewater Railroad.  Performances continue this weekend and next weekend.
