Through Local Eyes – Kids, crabs and the best day ever

When local filmmaker Randy Larcombe took his family away for a weekend shack holiday in Black Point on the Yorke Peninsula, he never imagined that their family video would end up as a three-minute cinema advertisement. But that is exactly what happened.

Larcombe, who grew up on the Yorke Peninsula, was commissioned by the South Australian Tourism Commission to create a short film about the Yorke Peninsula for their Through Local Eyes project, a series of YouTube videos where local filmmakers showcase the state through their eyes.

Larcombe said he was attracted by the project’s focus on authenticity, “I wanted to show a typical family shack holiday on Yorke Peninsula, so we packed the car, met some friends up at the Shack and let the camera roll for two days.”

But rather than producing a documentary, Larcombe decided to tell the story through the eyes of the children.

“Kids find fun in the simplest things; hunting in rockpools, looking for crabs, lazing about, beach cricket, digging in the sand, exploring and finding a beach to themselves. They slip into another world of their own making, where the days seem to go forever without interruption.”

To view Larcombe’s film, ‘Kids, crabs and the best day ever’ and to see the other Through Local Eyes films, visit www.youtube.com/southaustralia. Or to see it on the big screen, it will be playing in cinemas during the September school holidays.
