The life of Bart Cummings will be celebrated with a state funeral and requiem mass expected to be held at St Mary’s Cathedral in Sydney.

His son Anthony says details will be finalised on Monday with the family proud his father will be honoured in such a way.

The legendary trainer who won the Melbourne Cups 12 times died in the early hours of Sunday at the age of 87.

“(Premier) Mike Baird rang yesterday to offer a state funeral and we will accept that,” Anthony Cummings told Sky Sports Radio.

“I think it will be at the cathedral next Monday. The details will be worked out today.”

Apart from his staggering Melbourne Cup record, Cummings trained 256 Group One winners – second only to the legendary TJ Smith.

Cummings and the late CS Hayes were inaugural inductees to the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2001.

Last Friday marked the 61st wedding anniversary of Cummings and his wife Valmae who he met at a church social in 1953.

The Melbourne Cup nominations come out this week and among them will be Cummings stable favourite, veteran Precedence, who has already run in four with a best-placed sixth last year.
