Having mixed the drinks during the 2012 Test tour of the West Indies Peter Nevill will get the chance to do so again but this time he’ll have one eye on being Brad Haddin’s long-term successor.

The 29-year-old was rewarded for an outstanding Sheffield Season for NSW with both bat and gloves with selection for the upcoming tours of the Caribbean and the UK for The Ashes.

Nevill scored 764 Shield runs for the Blues, including a career-best 235 not out against Tasmania in addition to 29 catches and a competition-high five stumpings.

The Victorian has leapfrogged close friend and former state teammate Matthew Wade, who was first-choice against the Windies three years ago, in the pecking order for the No.2 gloveman spot.

Although he knows he’s unlikely to see too much action while Haddin is fit, he’s no intention of just going for the ride.

“It’s hard to predict what’ll happen in the future, but all I can do is go over and do whatever I can to help the guys in the West Indies and at The Ashes,” Nevill said.

“I have to prepare to play. I am there as a back-up to Brad but if he gets injured I need to be ready to play.”

Since his arrival at NSW from Victoria in 2009, Nevill has become close to the veteran keeper and said backing him up on tour will be a huge chance to learn more about the international arena from the man who is arguably the world’s best.

“Brad has had a massive influence on my career,” Nevill said.

“He has a great eye for wicket-keeping and understands the technical aspects so well. He’s certainly helped me become a better wicketkeeper.

“Being in the West Indies on the 2012 tour I learnt so much. Seeing some of the best players in the world and how they go through their preparations and how hard they train.

“It makes you realise you take your game to another level.”
