He may have tamed the wind at Metropolitan to take share of the Australian Masters tournament lead but Steven Bowditch believes he missed some chances.

The only blemish to an impressive opening round in some tough conditions was a bogey on the 18th.

That meant he dropped back to five under to share the overnight lead with three others in Michael Wright, Stephen Allan and amateur Todd Sinnott.

Defending champion Adam Scott, who is trying to take home a third successive title, had a one-over 73.

Bowditch, from Newcastle but based in the US, felt he could have done more.

“I didn’t feel like I played that great but I never really made any mistakes,” he said.

“I hit some good shots early but I didn’t capitalise on them.

“I didn’t hit it where I wanted to hit it a lot of times but I never got in trouble.

“On the eighth I just missed a tap-in putt and I haven’t done that for years.”

Bowditch scored a breakthrough victory at the Texas Open in March and finished second in the Frys.com Open last month and is up to 91 in the world rankings.

He has had a long documented battle with depression and is an ambassador for Beyond Blue.

He said he had drawn confidence from his success in 2014.

While he may not have been too impressed with his own game, he was with that of 22-year-old amateur Sinnott.

“He hit it so far – I haven’t seen someone hit it like that in a long time – and he can play too,” Bowditch said of Victorian Sinnott.

“There’s a lot of young guys out there that can all hit it a mile but sort of struggle to control their golf ball and just hit drivers everywhere.

“I think he only hit (with the) driver maybe two or three times (on Thursday).

“He’s an impressive player. He’s going to go some places.”
