Redbacks’ confront another false dawn

South Australia entered the Sheffield Shield season believing they were a serious chance at taking out the competition, but that confidence has been seriously dented after another second innings batting collapse.

Test quick Peter Siddle yesterday tore through the Redbacks’ batting order to deliver Victoria a thumping win. It was almost a carbon copy of South Australia’s final day collapse against NSW earlier in the month.

This time, the loss was even bigger.

Siddle took five wickets as SA crashed to 130 all out in their second innings to lose by an innings and 46 runs.

The Redbacks lasted just 40.3 overs on Wednesday’s final day at Adelaide Oval.

Siddle was the architect of SA’s demise, taking 5-31 from 12 overs before legspinner Fawad Ahmed (3-12) cleaned up the tail.

He claimed five of the initial six wickets to fall and, in the process, dashed the Test call-up hopes of SA opener Phil Hughes. Siddle bowled the lefthander for 11, after also dismissing Hughes for seven in the first dig.

Siddle then outed Mark Cosgrove (eight), Callum Ferguson (four) and Tom Cooper (10) to leave the Redbacks in tatters at 4-42.

The Redbacks never recovered despite brief resistance from Tim Ludeman, who top-scored with 36.

The next best SA batsman was Johan Botha who made 21 – the rest failed to pass 13 in a pitiful batting display in reply to Victoria’s 7(dec)-607.

SA made 8(dec)-431 in their first innings.

After a disastrous domestic one-day campaign in which they won only one match, the Redbacks were hoping the Shield season would show off a new resolve in the perennially struggling team.

Captain Botha said other states would continue to view the Redbacks as weak until they produced better performances late in matches.

“It’s a tough result to get bowled out in 40 overs when they have just made 600 on the same wicket,” Botha said.
