In a good sign for his Brownlow Medal chances, Port Adelaide midfielder Robbie Gray has won the AFL Coaches Association’s champion player award.
Gray has polled 102 votes and holds an unassailable lead with one round remaining – he’s seven votes ahead of suspended Fremantle midfielder Nat Fyfe, with Sydney onballer Josh Kennedy third on 83 votes.
Gray says winning the award is a reward for his most consistent season.
“It’s probably something you don’t really think about too much,” Gray told reporters on Wednesday.
“We’re just really focused on what we want to achieve this year still. And individual awards are nice but the reason you play footy is for that ultimate team success.
“It’s the most consistent season I have had but it’s all about team success.”
Gray, an all-time draft steal when taken with pick no.55 in the 2006 national draft, is averaging almost 25 disposals a game this season.
The 26-year-old has kicked 32 goals and also leads the competition for goal assists.
The award is decided by all senior coaches, who each cast votes on a five to one basis after every game.
His best on ground effort in last week’s win against Carlton has seen him move to third favourite for the Brownlow Medal behind Geelong’s Joel Selwood and injured Gold Coast star Gary Ablett.
