S EDWARD HALL: Re Wine judging is not a science (InDaily Food & Wine, July 2, 20130), some years ago a friend who is a statistician was asked by a group of eminent wine show judges to evaluate their judging methods at the Canberra Wine Show. Of course, he told them that their system had no relevance to any measure of accuracy. They were most anxious that this information not become public.

Wine shows are regarded as a lottery by intelligent winemakers and tasters. The rules state that a wine can only be entered once in any particular show. Presumably this is to avoid embarrassment for the judges.
