ASC workers take strike action

Workers at the Federal Government’s Adelaide-based shipbuilder ASC will take industrial action over the next five days after two years of fruitless negotiations on a new enterprise agreement.

The Australian Manufacturing Workers’ Union says ASC workers are unhappy about proposed revisions to their enterprise agreement that would strip back rights and entitlements.

AMWU acting state secretary Colin Fenney says workers will take a rostered day off on Friday and will not work on Saturday or Sunday because of a ban on overtime.

They’ll also stay on strike on Monday and Tuesday.

“Workers have been left with no option but to engage in protected industrial action,” Fenney said.

“This is the first time that ASC has sought to impose Australian Public Service guidelines on its workforce which is removing flexibility from the ASC enterprise agreement and clearing the decks for privatisation.”
