London-based non-government organisation CDP (formerly known as the Climate Disclosure Project) has released its CDP Cities 2015 Report, listing Adelaide among the world’s best-performing cities for emissions reporting.

Climate Change Minister Ian Hunter said the report demonstrated the merits of the goal to make Adelaide the world’s first carbon neutral city.

“This international report is another feather in the cap in the city’s race to become carbon neutral,” Hunter said.

“It provides credibility and adds to our international reputation as the place to come and build the businesses for the low-carbon economy of tomorrow.”

He said the world-first target would help attract investment to the state.

“The ambition to make Adelaide the world’s first carbon neutral city will also attract investment and make our capital city a showcase for renewables and clean technology,” Hunter said.

“Achieving this requires innovation and innovators need quality data.”

The report describes the Adelaide City Council as having “consistently demonstrated leadership in delivering real and lasting reductions in carbon emissions”.

Lord Mayor Martin Haese said Adelaide carbon emissions had fallen by 20 per cent from 2007 to 2013.

“This report further shows that the world is watching, and that our success is a showcase for what can be achieved when local and state government work together.”

Hunter said the State Government and the Adelaide City Council were continuing to pursue methods to reduce emissions in the city.

A previous version of this article incorrectly stated that Adelaide was the only city in Australia to be in the top ten in the CDP Cities 2015 Report. Canberra was also in the top ten.
