A scholarship has been established to build on the work of the late Graeme Hugo.

Hugo, who died in January after a short illness, was one of Australia’s most distinguished demographers. A memorial lecture in his name will be delivered at the University of Adelaide tonight.

The State Government will provide $5000 a year for the next three years to support honours students involved in fields connected with Hugo’s work.

Premier Jay Weatherill, who will speak at the memorial lecture tonight, said the scholarship was a fitting way to ensure Hugo’s legacy continued.

“Through this scholarship, honours students will be able to pursue studies in fields aligning with the professor’s work – be it geography, population policy or a similar field,” he said.

Successful recipients will take part in an internship in the Department of State Development working on a project “that is of value to the State Government”.

University of Adelaide vice-chancellor Warren Bebbington said the scholarship would allow a new generation to follow in Hugo’s footsteps.

“His work lives on through the many students and academic staff who were privileged to learn from him over the years,” he said.

“And now, through this honours scholarship, a new generation will have the opportunity to take up the baton and pursue further study in social sciences.”
