Eight police stations to close soon

May 05, 2015

South Australian Police Commissioner Gary Burns has confirmed that eight “satellite” police stations will close across Adelaide by June 30 this year.

Burns said today the stations to close as part of an “ongoing organisational review” were Firle, Newton, North Adelaide, Blakeview, Pooraka, Tea Tree Gully, Malvern and Hallett Cove.

He insisted the closures would not result in reduced services or police numbers.

“The officers currently based at these small stations will remain in the same policing areas and will be redeployed on operational duties to benefit the local community,” Burns said.

“I realise that some people see a reduction in bricks and mortar as a reduction in service, but that could not be further from the truth. People, not buildings, are at the heart of a responsive policing service.

“It is also important to note that patrols do not respond to crime from these small stations – patrols are sent from Local Service Area headquarters, large patrol bases or, if they are already patrolling, from their location on the road.”

He said the review found the stations received, on average, three to six inquiries a day. In some instances there were no inquiries for several days.
