A construction worker injured at the new Royal Adelaide Hospital site yesterday has died.

SafeWork SA announced today that Jorge Castillo-Riffo, 54, had died as a result of crush injuries sustained to his head, neck and back.

Work has been suspended on the site until next Tuesday.

SafeWork SA executive director Bryan Russell said extra inspectors would be at the hospital site from Tuesday to “maintain an active and visible presence”.

“This death is a sad reminder of why we all need to remain vigilant in eliminating and minimising work health and safety hazards,” Russell said.

Castillo-Riffo was found by fellow workers yesterday morning with injuries caused when he was crushed between a scissor-lift and the concrete construction on level two of the new hospital building.

No-one witnessed the incident.

He was taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital.

SafeWork SA’s investigation is ongoing.

Russell said no more information about the incident would be released while the investigation was underway “given information and items gathered may later be used as evidence in legal proceedings”.

There have been 12 work-related deaths in South Australia in 2014, compared to 15 last year.
