Stephen Yarwood has been ousted as Lord Mayor of Adelaide after businessman Martin Haese won a tight race on Saturday night.

Yarwood’s defeat after one term in Town Hall wasn’t the only surprise in the local government elections.

High profile mayors were also defeated in the western suburbs.

Across South Australia overall turnout ended up at 31 per cent – a slight fall on the previous two elections (31.6 per pent and 32.4 per cent).

New mayors include Angela Keneally in Charles Sturt, who defeated high profile Kirsten Alexander who came to power on the back of concerns about housing development at St Clair, and Stephen Patterson at Holdfast Bay, a former AFL footballer who ended Ken Rolland’s long tenure.

But the biggest shock of the night was Yarwood, who won the first preference vote but ended up losing to Haese by just over 200 votes, thanks to preferences flowing to Haese from Lord Mayoral candidate Mark Hamilton.
