A State Government-commissioned audit has recommended the abolition of 105 government boards, with another 194 to be either reformed, merged or reclassified.

The list of boards recommended for abolition includes the Equal Opportunity Tribunal, Guardianship Board, the Premier’s Taxi Council, the South Australian Tourism Commission board, the State Theatre Company board, Motor Sport Board, and disciplinary tribunals for lawyers, police and health practitioners.

The full list can be found here.

Releasing the report, Premier Jay Weatherill said the process of cutting and streamlining boards and committees would reduce red tape.

He also wanted to find new ways for the Government to be informed on policy issues, “as too often this advice is confined to a select group of people”.

“While some boards, such as the Economic Development board and the Defence SA (board) will be retained, it is clear that many others no longer have relevance or they should be replaced,” he said.

“Some boards will be merged to remove duplication and others will be subject to reform, for example those recommended by the Expert Panel on Planning Reform.”

The report recommends that of the 429 State Government boards and committees:

  • 105 be abolished
  • 72 be retained as they are
  • 18 be merged
  • 59 be reformed
  • 117 be classified
  • 58 be further investigated before a final decision is made.

Weatherill said it would be difficult to quantify savings from the reforms.

The interim report would “help to inform the drafting of legislation that will remove the legal requirements for the existence of particular boards and committees”.

A final report and resulting legislation would be finalised later this year.
