InDaily reporter Liam Mannix has won a national Walkley award for his innovative reporting for Adelaide’s independent news website.

Mannix beat a strong field in Sydney last night at the 2013 Walkley Young Australia Journalist of the Year awards in the category ‘Innovation in Journalism’.

Mannix won for three InDaily stories: “Unis accused of bonus points war”, “Adelaide metro bus frequency map” and “Mapping SA’s population shifts”.

The judges said “Liam’s work is a strong demonstration of how data can be newsworthy and relevant to local audiences”.

Bonus Points War” shows Liam’s nose for news and tells the story with a clear narrative with great impact. The mapping of local bus data gives readers a tool to better understand his story about the future of public transport in Adelaide. His work shows a clear understanding of his audience and the story the data tells. The fact that this work was produced without the resources of a large newsroom makes it even more impressive.”

Mannix started with InDaily as an intern in 2012, and former editor Des Ryan picked him quickly as a talent and offered him a job.

Current editor David Washington said Mannix was a dedicated reporter with great writing skills, a nose for a story, and the ability to use all kinds of data tools to present the news.

“This is a great achievement for Liam, but it also feels like a watershed moment for InDaily,” Washington said.

“It’s great that an independent player can nurture such outstanding young journalism talent.”
