Belair train back in two weeks

Jul 01, 2013

Train services on the Belair line will resume in two weeks, the State Government announced this morning.

The line, which runs from the city to Belair in Adelaide’s south, has been closed since January as the Goodwood Junction underpass project was completed.

The line will reopen on Sunday, July 14.

Services from Blackwood to the city will run every 15 minutes. The re-opened line will also get additional train services at morning and evening peak times.

The $110 million underpass separates the Belair line from the Noarlunga line, allowing train services to pass unimpeded.

The underpass will also allow freight trains on the Noarlunga line to run at full speed. The Government says this will stop lengthy delays – which can be between five and 16 minutes – at rail crossings on Cross and Torrens roads.

The infrastructure work is also being sold as productivity-boosting because it will allow longer freight trains to run on the line.

The Noarlunga line, along with the Tonsley line, is currently closed until September for electrification work.

In a statement released to media this morning Minister for Transport Services Chloe Fox thanked commuters for their patience as the Government worked to complete the project.

“Commuters on the Belair line–your patience has been appreciated,” she said. “The reopening of the Belair line marks another major step in the modernisation of Adelaide’s rail network.

“After a long wait customers will now experience a far more efficient rail service with an updated timetable that improves efficiency, reliability and creates more travel options.”
