The Rosie Batty Story

2015 Australian of the Year Rosie Batty will share her personal story and message about domestic violence at The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre on Saturday 10 October at 2.00pm.

Rosie Batty rose above her personal tragedy and the great loss of her 11 year old son, Luke, who was the victim of domestic violence at the hands of his father in a very public assault. She now champions efforts to fight domestic violence.

In her Australia Day speech Rosie said that while Australians live in a “wonderful country … there remains a serious epidemic across our nation”. She also aims to spread the message that “family violence happens to everybody. No matter how nice your house is, how intelligent you are. It happens to anyone and everyone”.

Rosie hopes to push for a government-funded public awareness campaign on domestic violence, akin to Australia’s road safety campaign.

Along with the former Victorian Police Chief Ken Lay, Rosie has been named as the founding members of the Council of Australian Governments advisory panel on preventing violence against women. She is also an Ambassador for Our Watch, The Lort Smith Animal Hospital and Doncare Community Services and this year was inducted into the Victorian Honour Roll of Women.

Her remarkable story demonstrates resilience, courage, inspiration and making a difference. Rosie’s incredible strength and selfless efforts are an inspiration to many people.

Presented by The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre and the Australia Day Council of South Australia
