A fair go?

Throughout its history South Australia has been a leader in the promotion of equal opportunity and human rights – pioneering rights for women in the 1800s, addressing race discrimination in the 1960s and decriminalising homosexuality in the 1970s. This commitment to human rights paved the way for our states’ Equal Opportunity Act.

For the past 30 years, this Act has played an important role in promoting equality of opportunity for all South Australians. The act protects our rights – making discrimination unlawful in public life if based on a person’s age, race, disability, sex, sexuality and a range of other personal characteristics.

Thirty years on an informed and diverse panel question if South Australians really have a fair go? The panel will include perspectives from:

  • Senator the Hon. Penny Wong
  • Hon Kelly Vincent MLC
  • Commissioner for Victims’ Rights Michael O’Connell
  • Judge Rauf Soulio
  • Professor Irene Watson
  • Tory Shepherd, Political Editor

Join The Bob Hawke Prime Ministerial Centre and the Equal Opportunity Commission for this lively and interactive discussion, marking International Human Rights Day. The event will be followed by refreshments in the Kerry Packer Civic Gallery.
