100 years on: the Anzac spirit lives

We thought we knew something of the horrors of war, but we were mere recruits, and have had our full education in one day.

Lieutenant Ronald McInnis from Mackay. A Gallipoli veteran of the 53rd Battalion

Between 2014 and 2018 Australia will commemorate the Anzac Centenary, marking 100 years since our nation’s involvement in the First World War.

The Anzac Centenary is a milestone of special significance to all Australians. The First World War helped define us as a people and as a nation.

The premier event on the Hawke Centre’s calendar, the Annual Hawke Lecture will this year be delivered by Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, AC, AFC (Ret’d), who will lead the Anzac Centenary commemorations, giving the opportunity for South Australians to reflect upon and learn more about Australia’s military history, its costs and its impacts on our nation.

Save the date! 5 August, 6pm, Adelaide Town Hall.

Follow the Hawke Centre program to keep up-to-date with announcements on this very special Hawke Centre lecture.

While the views presented by speakers within the Hawke Centre public program are their own and are not necessarily those of either the University of South Australia or The Hawke Centre, they are presented in the interest of open debate and discussion in the community and reflect our themes of: strengthening our democracy – valuing our diversity – and building our future.
