Spreading the chocolate love

Adelaide is about to host the world’s first “Nutella-palooza” – a self-funded public event created by local fans of the spread who are on a mission to spread the chocolate love.

The free-entry event in Bonython Park on Saturday is the brainchild of Delectaballs food-truck owner David Porcaro, who thought of the idea in June last year.

“Myself and a few friends were sitting there one afternoon trying some Nutella spreads and thought: Who else would put on an event like this?” he says.

“It’s celebrating Nutella in its raw form, in baked goods, in drinks, and it’s just a bit of entertainment for everyone.”

With no previous event planning experience, Porcaro relied on the help of Adelaide City Council community projects program Splash Adelaide, as well as the creative and financial input of friend Tash Weggery, to organise the event that he hopes will draw more than 10,000 people.

Porcaro says Nutella-palooza is costing between $40,000 and $50,000 to run and is mostly being funded by him and his partner Christina Adamczyk, with no money from Nutella. However, they hope to secure future support from the State Government to make it an annual event.

“As long as this meets people’s expectations, I’d put it on again in a heartbeat. It’d be great to get some support from State Government, because I’d love to keep this in SA.”

Without the prospect of a positive financial return from the event, Porcaro says he and Adamczyk’s main motivation is to bring happiness to as many people as possible.

“When people see Nutella, they think of happiness. The product itself is great, but it’s the feeling it relates to that’s important,” he says.

“If people come on the day and have fun, that’s my end game.”

Local chocolatiers and patissiers such as Bracegirdles, Steven ter Horst and Sucre Patisserie will be bringing their hand-made treats to Nutella-palooza, which will feature a chocolate fountain and chocolate cocktails. However, those without a sweet tooth will also be catered for, with around 50 stalls including bakers and food trucks offering a range of chocolate-free alternatives.
