Flinders University will welcome back its first, and one its most accomplished, medical graduates to deliver the annual Chalmers Oration on Thursday (July 24).

Professor Chris Baggoley, who is Chief Medical Officer for the Australian Government and a former Chief Executive Director with the South Australian Department of Health, will speak about his “reflections on the last 35 years in the real world”.

The Chalmers Oration is named after John Chalmers, the Foundation Chair of Medicine at Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide, who was one of the driving forces in the development of the Flinders Medical School.

“As the first graduate of the Flinders University School of Medicine, the Chalmers Oration affords an excellent opportunity to provide feedback, both serious and light hearted, on how the course, so greatly influenced by John Chalmers, prepared me for what lay ahead,” Professor Baggoley said.

Professor Baggoley, whose career has been in emergency medicine, chairs the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee. He also represents Australia on the IARC (International Agency for Research in Cancer) Governing Council and is a Council member of the National Health and Medical Research Council.

The Chalmers Oration will be delivered this Thursday (July 24) from 11-1pm at Flinders University, Health Sciences Lecture Theatre, Sturt Road, Bedford Park.
