New Chief Executive starts at Defence SA

South Australia’s defence agency Defence SA has welcomed Matt Opie as its new Chief Executive.

Opie has 25 years of experience in the defence and space sectors and was previously Director of Defence and Space at the University of South Australia, Head of Industry Engagement at Saab Australia, and Program Manager at RPDE and BAE Systems.

Opie is a graduate of the Australian Defence Force Academy and the Royal Military College Duntroon and has served the Australian Army in Australia and the Middle East.

Opie’s appointment comes as South Australia continues its ship-building programs at Osborne, focusing on the construction of Hunter Class Frigates, AUKUS nuclear-powered submarines, and upgrades to Air Warfare Destroyers and Collins class submarines.

Australian Agribusiness Elders Limited has appointed Damien Frawley as a non-executive director, who will join the board on July, 1.

Frawley is currently Chair of the Queensland Treasury Corporation and Host-Plus Pty Limited.

He is also a non-executive director of Mirvac Group and Blue-Sky Beef Pty Ltd.

Elders offers insurance, real estate, financial services and agricultural services and is headquartered on Grenfell Street.

Leadership change at the SA Bar

The South Australian Bar Association has announced the appointment of Georgia Lloyd as a new Executive Officer.

Lloyd was previously Manager of the Office of the Chief Executive at the SACE Board and a Senior Advisor to former SA parliament Speaker Josh Teague.

According to its website, the SA Bar “is an association of independent barristers based in South Australia providing legal representation and assistance to the community”.

Human Resources Business Partner for Australian Naval Infrastructure, the organisation responsible for the expansion and modernisation of the Osborne Naval Shipyard into a world-class shipbuilding precinct.

Former Bedford Group Chief Executive joins Maxima

Not-for-profit employment services provider Maxima has appointed Maggie Dowling as its Executive Manager National Specialists.

Maggie Dowling

Dowling is the former Chief Executive of Bedford Group and was also a Service SA Director at the South Australian Department for Infrastructure and Transport.

She is also on the board of the Future Food Systems Cooperative Research Centre and has previously held senior roles at the City of Playford and the City of Mitcham.

Maxima is a Workforce Australia employment services provider headquartered in Adelaide.

Flinders Port Holdings board appointments

Flinders Port Holdings has appointed Annette Carey and Daniel Beaver to its board, replacing Tom Laidlaw and filling a casual vacancy respectively.

Carey is currently a non-executive director of Kinetic TCO, Stigma Healthcare, the National Intermodal Corporation and Orizontas.

Before this, she was CEO at Linfox Armaguard and Linfox Australia. She has also been the Executive General Manager International at Australia Post.

Daniel Beaver

Beaver is currently Executive Director at global infrastructure firm Foresight Group Australia, which manages $23 billion (AUD) of assets.

Flinders Port Holdings owns and operates the Flinders Adelaide Container Terminal and the regional ports of Port Giles, Port Lincoln, Wallaroo, Port Pirie, Klein Point and Thevenard.

CEDA Council Member joins Flinders University’s Factory of the Future

Philipp Dautel has joined as Principal Manager at Flinders University’s Factory of the Future.

Dautel is currently an SA/NT State Advisory Council Member at the Committee for Economic Development of Australia.

Before joining Flinders University, Dautel was Tonsley Precinct Director/Stakeholder Relations/Investment Attraction at Renewal SA and he has also been SME Engagement Officer at CSIRO

According to Flinders University, the Factory of the Future “brings innovation, Industry 4.0 technologies, research and training together to advance manufacturing and strengthen the nation’s economy”.

Up the Spurs!

Gerald Lami

Gerald Lami, a coach at the Premier League’s Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, is joining Christian Brothers College for the entirety of the school calendar’s Term 2.

Lami is currently the Football Development Head Coach at Spurs and has also been the International Development Coach and Foundation Football Coach at the club.

Before this, he was a coach at AFC Wimbledon, Juventus Football Club and Arsenal F.C.

Lami is also the digital presenter of the Coach Gerald Lami podcast.

St Ann’s College gets a new Dean

St Ann’s College has appointed Lucy Fairlie-Jones as its new Dean.

Fairlie-Jones previously worked at Seymour College, where she was Head of Boarding.

The appointment comes following the promotion of former Dean Wendy Fleming to Principal/CEO of the college late last year.

St Ann’s College is a residential college in North Adelaide.
