The directors of the company have placed the company in administration “to work on an overhaul/restructure of its retail and wholesale meat operations”, according to a statement released today.

Stephen Duncan and Chris Powell of DuncanPowell have been appointed voluntary administrators.

The business employs 38 people across its retail and wholesale meat and livestock operations in South Australia.

The Royal Park-based company has retail outlets at Craigmore, Christies Beach and Kadina, although it has closed a number of other outlets over the past 12 months.

On its Facebook page yesterday, the company gave some clue of the trouble ahead, posting: “Our business is going through a restructuring process and as a result of this, the only stores now operating are our flagship store in Royal Park and our Christies Beach Store.”

Powell said the company’s directors were “enthusiastic about the opportunity of restructuring the business to enable Gawler River Cattle Co to secure its future”.

“This company has been beset by some unexpected problems in recent years, most of which have been out of its control, including a fire and the theft of livestock which has significantly impacted on the capability of the business to trade efficiently,” Powell said.

“We will work closely with the company’s stakeholders to achieve the best possible outcome which may include a sale of the business,” he said.

Powell said it was business as usual at the company’s remaining outlets, which would continue to supply retail and wholesale customers.
